Hello

Finally decided to build myself a new computer, other one was going on 5 years old and was showing its age.....

I just have it idling in the Bios right now, making sure everything stays up and running for awhile before I install Vista 64, got a coupon for a free 7 upgrade with it. Heres some links of what I put into it:

I went with 4 gigs of memory, the tower is pretty big and heavy but was a pleasure working with it. I used the DVD and burner from the old tower. Am sure impressed with the way that Zalman is cooling, I have the fan idled down on it and its sitting at around 26 C. Out of all the towers I've put together over the years this is the coolest the processor has run....After I get Vista installed I'll post back with some bootup times, etc....

    Very nice! Congrats!

I'm also running a PCP&C Silencer 610. And I like your choice of computer speakers...I'm using the same ones!

I'm upgrading my RAM, case, and gfx card here as soon as money allows. I narrowed it down to that XFX 4890 or a PNY GTX275, and I've decided to go with the 275...whenever I can afford it.

    Hope it treats you well!

Those Zallman coolers always amaze me.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Nice PC. The only problem with side-draft coolers is that they don't usually provide adequate cooling for the CPU VRM. The CPU itself is likely to stay nice and chilly since that hot air is getting taken right out of the case, tho.

I see your motherboard at least has heatsinks on the FETs.
    Ludicrous gibs!

Yes, definately agree with you, was trying to get some cool air on the video card since these things run so damn hot these days....
Sorry, thought you were talking about the case.....buy yeah, that too...

I built another tower awhile back with the same mother board and used this cooler:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118030

which drew in the air around all the finned heatsinks, we're talking barely fitting on there though.....

How can you tell how effective the cooling is on an idling processor? You have no load on the system and you don't even have an operating system installed yet. It may run cool but at this point it is a bit silly to talk about how cool your system appears to run when it is just a pile of parts.

You need to re-read my post, I said I was going to report back after the os is installed.....

Uhhhhhh... because when people measure effectiveness of aftermarket coolers, they always give idle/load temperatures, before and after...

LOL... my CPU idles at 56c. Under load I've seen 78c. And that's WITH an aftermarket cooler and Arctic Silver 5 paste on it.

    But then.... it's a P4 Prescott...

Nice cooling. Time to start overclocking. I just build an AMD Phenom X4 9950 machine and with stock cooling my core temperatures are 45C idle and 57C full load. No overclocking for me unless I swap out the stock cooler.

Nice build, get in there and knock that wire management out. You will probably see temps drop even more due to better airflow. My X4 920 is OC'd to 3.5 idle temps @ 28C, full load under prime 95 around 45-48C. I plan to take it further and see how high I can get it. Right now 3.5 stable seems blazing to me. Running push/pull setup using Xigamatek Dark Knight and AS5. I would also recommend you guys check out Asus Soundcards over onboard chipsets, amazing difference in quality.

@ Lorthos: solid build! :D only thing i would have done differently was better/more RAM and/or a T.R.U.E 120/Scythe ninja for CPU cooler :) Personally i never trust on board temp sensor's, but that's just me....

@ Sherardp: nice build! is that an Antec 1200? +1 to the Asus sound card's. Is that Xiggy an HDT style cooler? :)

I hear that Artic Silver mx-2 is supposed to be better than AS5? Anyone here ever tried it? When i run out of AS5 i will try some mx-2 :)

Yeah, I could maybe get the power wires to the back of the case more. Kinda tough sometimes to get some of those wires routed to where you would like them at or the best spot.....

Yes will agree with more ram, but I'll stick with Kingston:)

Geez, my monitor looks pretty puny against the big tower doesn't it...Hmmm might have to do something about that too....

nothing wrong with kingston RAM just i would have used higher speed with better latency is all :)

you can always make a few hole's in the MOBO tray to facilitate better cable management ;)

I like Kingston RAM. I'm using it now with no problems. Case I'm using is Antec 902 and best CPU paste out now is IC7

Okay, heres my report back....Vista 64 installed just fine, kinda weird the way it installs compared to XP. Half the time it seems like it isn't doing anything.....

Installed all the Asus drivers, it also installed this EPU-6 engine program, don't really seem like I need it but left it for now. Also installed the latest XFX drivers which also went fine. Windows experience index is sitting at 5.7. Am also running ESET Nod 32 spyware/virus program which I've had very good luck with.

Shut down time is 5 seconds and boot up is 35 seconds from the time the Microsoft bar starts. The Bios on this Asus does quite a bit of **** around and it has that Express Gate program that loads right away also so thats the reason I timed it that way.

I guess my pile of parts is all working in sync:)

Attached is an Idle screen and a full CPU load screen also:

EPU 6 is for better power control on idle or low usage task's, ASUS is thinking green ;)

I haven't played around with the BIOS yet (still burning in PC) but you should be able to tweak a few setting's and also there should be some registry tweak's you can do in VISTA (haven't done any myself yet but should be similar to what was available for Xp) Those should help speed up your boot time if it's a concern for you :)

I run a few tweak/monitor programs myself. Since Im overclocking, I use prime 95, memtest, etc. I overclock from the BIOS not utilities. I would suggest overclocking to get the most of that rig. Good luck.
