Hi all...this is a local sale I found on Ebay. Was wondering what everyones thoughts were on these. To be honest, I'm relatively new, and am still confused about some thigns. I use my setup for mainly home theatre. I have Monitor 50's, 30's, CS1, Def. Tech Prosub 800, Onkyo 606 - obviously a decent budget system. I'm always looking locally for deals, and I hear people talk about specific speakers being good for music or home theatre...some I have yet to hear people speak much about. From what I've seen, the LSi series is mostly for music??? Rti for HT??? Monitors for both??? What about the VM series? I saw some of them locally, and pretty reasonable. Would those Monitor 7's fit into a HT system? Thanks, and feel free to elaborate on anything you'd like to on the topic.

I don't have monitor 7s, but I used monitor 5Bs for my fronts in my HT for a while and I really liked them.

I'm just not sure how this all works. Obviously these are vintage speakers...I have the monitor series now...would these timbre match my speakers? What would htey replace, the 50's? 30's? WOuld it be worth it? What's the difference between 5's, 7's, and the more current models?

    Thanks,

    that's alot of ???
    I'll tackle a few...
I got a pair of 7c's for $60 off of CL...not 'immaculate', but decent shape cab (couple of dings on the back edge), drivers all in good shape... so those on ebay for $195 are quite a bit high $$, IMHO...
You can find some for alot less...check CL.

I use mine as fronts, so in your setup, they would replace the M50's, actually supersede is a better term, since they have a much fuller sound.

As far as the timber match, the Monitor 7's are a 6.5" MW with the SL2000 tweeter and a 10" Passive radiator. They have more bass response, as in they produce more of the bass signal, so they are not an exact match for the smaller MW in the Mom50's. However, timber match is not as important between front and rears, so you could keep either of those as rears, although you could sell the Mon50's for more $$.

As far as the difference, the monitor 5's have the same tweeters, same size (different model #) MW, and a smaller 6.5" Passive radiator.

    Couple of ref specs:
    Mon50's - http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/specs/recent/monitor50/
    Monitor 7's - http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/specs/recent/monitor7/
    Monitor 5's - http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/specs/recent/monitor5/

nother note: you will see ALOT of discussion about tweeters...save that for another day...;)

As far differences to current models. well that is a whole separate book...
    welcome....

The vintage Monitor's and the newer Monitors have nothing in common, aside from the name.

Monitor 7's are some fantastic speakers. I've had my 7A's hooked back up for the last couple days, and I'm really diggin' it. IMO, $195 is too high though. 7's can be had for less than $100 pretty regularly.

Thanks for the tips...do these look to be in good shape? Also, I can power these with my Onkyo 606? I'm also guessing the CS1 will not timbre match these...what center speaker was intended to go with these speakers?

    Thanks,

These speakers were made before the days of HT systems, so you won't find a center channel that's specifically matched to them. I personally use a CS350LS with my 5s, which sounds pretty good together.

As for the Onkyo, it'll power them. It's probably not ideal though. I powered my 5s with an Onkyo 777 for a while. They sounded decent, but when I added an external amp (even just a 65watt Pioneer SA-7700) they REALLY came to life.

I think the above posters are right though, the price is a little high. If you sniff around CL for a while, you may even be able to snag a pair of 7s and an older amp for around the $195 that this offer is asking.

Yes, I paid $80 for one pair that i gave away to a cousin of mine for her house warming present, it was her first apartment. And I got my second pair for $50 and they are in even nicer condition.

The first pair i bought at around the same location of where these are selling.

I don't think he will get any bid, if you are local then offer him $80 and go pick them up. You do not want to ship those speakers, the magnets have a tendency of coming loose during shipping.

    I got mine for $20 at a local auction.

I'm running a 606 in my HT system, and before I got the RTi's, my 7's were pulling front channel duty. The 606 did a fine job of powering them. The vintage Monitors are generally pretty easy speakers to drive.

That being said, I'm running them with separates in my 2 channel rig right now, and the improvements in their sound is very dramatic. There's a world of difference between an AVR and separates. As I said though, you'll be fine running them with the 606.

There wasn't really a center speaker designed to go with the vintage Monitors. As far as the best match, I'd probably go with a CSi5 myself.

$195 is way too high. You should be able to find them for $100 or less all day on CL or ebay.

    I would pass
    Main Surround -
    Epson 8350 Projector/ Elite Screens 120" / Pioneer Elite SC-35 / Sunfire Signature / Focal Chorus 716s / Focal Chorus CC / Polk MC80 / Polk PSW150 sub

    Bedroom - Sharp Aquos 70" 650 / Pioneer SC-1222k / Polk RT-55 / Polk CS-250

    Den - Rotel RSP-1068 / Threshold CAS-2 / Boston VR-M60 / BDP-05FD

Thanks for the tips. I emailed the guy and offered him less. We'll see what happens. I found these online that just look SOOOO pretty: http://cgi.ebay.com/POLK-Monitor-10-Speaker-pair-Looks-unused-in-boxes_W0QQitemZ110431242048QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSpeakers_Subwoofers?hash=item19b6370740&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 . I would love to hear comments on how well these vintage monitor's work with a HT setup.

$125 if they are mint wouldn't be too too bad, but these particular speakers have the SL2000 tweeters, and after upgrading them, and doing the XO's it would get pretty pricey. They certainly are nice speakers, but patience will most likely lead you to a better deal.

Nice speakers but not worth $300+. Those are monitor 10's with peerless tweeters and range from $100-$200 with a $100 being a steal.

After hearing both I like the 7's more. RTA's should also be watched out for, and of coarse SDA's. The RTA's are much more user/environment friendly than SDA's.

All of the vintage monitor series 5,7,8,10,11,12,15 have a much different sound than the current series. It's a GOOD sound though. You can definitely find some better deals if you look. Be careful, you start out wanting HT, until you get your first pair of the vintage polks, and then it starts. You will find yourself enjoying music more, and then the 2 channel bug starts:D It's an awesome adventure IMHO. For me, and many others here, the vintage polks opened up a whole new world, and a new appreciation for music and audio in general! I say bide your time and wait for a good deal, and go for it. You won't regret it. From what I've learned on here, the monitor 7,10,11 are some of the best bang for the buck deals to be had out there, especially considering the sound you get for the price. All of which can be regularly found on CL/ebay for $150 and less. The 12,15 are also great, but not as common or inexpensive in most cases. Then you get to the SDA which is a whole new level. I hope that helps:) Happy shopping!
