Cleaning vinyl veneer?

Hey everyone.
Any suggestions on what to use to clean the vinyl veneer on my Monitor 7's?
I was thinking a really mild dish soap solution would probably work the best...any other suggestions?

Ooops and a rag.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

Curt, I wouldn't use anything under a 1750psi pressure washer.

Forgot to mention...What I'm trying to clean is this slightly tacky, filmy kinda residue along the bottom edge of the speakers. It was there when I got them.
I managed to get most of it off right after I got them...but there are some patches where I couldn't get it off with just a wet rag.
Should I just try again and scrub like hell?
Rich-I'll try the pressure washer in the morning. I'd try it now, but it's dark out, and I don't really feel like lugging the pressure washer in the house...lolThe nirvana inducer-

No guts, no glory!:D
I've used a dash of diluted Simple Green to get stubborn stuff off. Works great on nicotine film. And a rag/old towell.;)
Did they have some kind of adhesive rubber strips on there? I've also used diluted brake cleaner, but you have to be careful with that stuff. My fav is Zep, product 0184.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 * -
I used simply orange...
It is amazing how much sludge came off them.
I think it also helps revitalize the vinyl as well.
Looks good as new.
Oh yeah, and a t-shirt rag too... -
You could try a Magic Eraser as well.____________________

I'm not sure what it's from. It's a kind of greasy...slightly stick residue. They might have been in a kitchen near a cooking area or something. I suppose it could be nicotine film...but they don't smell like cigarette smoke. You could try a Magic Eraser as well.
Interesting idea...I might have to try that if I can't scrub them off.Molecular acid.
How about a bon fire? I'll just burn them clean...The nirvana inducer-

Just be careful with the Magic Eraser-It can take a finish off, esp if its a shiny one. Learned that the hard way on Eggshell finish walls. Works like a champ on the plastic trim area in a car though-that no other cleaner can seem to do for me. You know the textured areas like near the treadboard getting in and out of the car and the door panels. I've also used it with success on the vinyl backs of seats in the car esp. where my kids love to kick and park their feet.____________________

Windex. Works like a charm."They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I second the Windex suggestion. If that doesn't do it, test a small area using Goof Off, checking that it doesn't remove any color. If it does, stop!
I cannot recommend using Oops any longer as they changed their formula and it will damage surfaces that it didn't bother before.Political Correctness'.........defined

Dawn liquid dish soap, Fantastic or wheel cleaner (the type approved for painted/clearcoat wheels) BTW....brake cleaner WILL dissolve your vinyl quickly!!

Just be careful with the Magic Eraser-
+100
Avoid the Magic Eraser, it's a deceptively strong abrasive...(think ultra fine steel wool) You could try it, but use almost NO pressure. I've used them to clean white leather sneakers, and it takes the leather finish off when you get aggressive with the scrubbing. -
I could have really used the Magic Eraser back in School for all my mistakes. Sure would have made quick work of erasing an entire page quickly. :D____________________

I use L.O.C. (liquid organic cleaner) from Amway. It is COMPLETELY organic and a little bit goes a long way. It's even ok to drink...... HMMM..... I am feeling a little parched....

just take off the vinyl and recover them in a nice walnut or cherry real wood veneer. The Gear... Windex eh? I've used it to clean the drivers before, but never thought to use it on the cabinets themselves. Works like a charm on the drivers. I'm probably gonna give that a try later on. I'll report back.:)
Thanks for the suggestion!nooshinjohn wrote: »just take off the vinyl and recover them in a nice walnut or cherry real wood veneer.
They're going to get recovered in some real walnut veneer eventually, but that's not high on my list of priorities right now. Aside from a few corner dings, the vinyl on them is in really good shape. They're not getting re-veneered until after I'm done with XO upgrades, Mortite, Dynamat etc...The nirvana inducer-

All I have ever used is windex on mine. I would like to redo them in a real wood veneer later but for now they will have to do.

Thanks for the Windex suggestion everyone! I cleaned the 7's up earlier today...took all of the tackiness off the cabinets with no problem. They're shining now!!
Aside from a couple corners with peeling veneer, and one relatively minor corner dent, these things are really in fantastic shape.
I still want to rebuild the dented corner, and reveneer them with some real walnut eventually, but they're looking fantastic for the time being!
I'll get some pics up sometime soon. The nirvana inducer-
