Plasma TV/Old Onkyo TX-SR600/Panasonic BMP-60

Hey guys,
I made the leap away from my 10 year old tube TV. I'm a little confused on how to hook everything up. The Panasonic Plasma tv and BlueRay player have HDMI connects. My old Onkyo TX-SR600 doesn't have HDMI. I want to be able to listen to the BlueRay movies in Dolby 5.1.

I will be hooking up the DVD player directly to the TV with an HDMI cable. My problem is that HDMI is audio and video. I want the audio from the DVD player to go to my reciever. If I have the HDMI output from the DVD player going to the TV, can I also have the optical audio going from the DVD player to my reciever for the 5.1? Will it work? Clear as mud?

Thanks!

    CALoff,

    I use the same setup as you. My HDTV has 3 HDMI inputs.

    PS3 HDMI --> TV
    PS3 Optical Cord --> Receiver

    Nintendo Wii Components -- > TV
    TV (optical out) ---> Receiver

    So yes, it will work. Basically your TV will do the video and your receiver will handle the sound.

    EDIT: after looking at the rear panel (http://www.us.onkyo.com/zoom.cfm?class=Receiver&m=TX-SR600#) of your receiver. Looks like you only have 2 optical inputs. (wait for other fellow Polkies to give you advise)

    Cal, you do have a coax audio digital input and 2 optic digital inputs.
    Use the coax for the DVD player.
    Use the optic for your HD TV tuner box, if you have one, to get surround.
    Use optic from the TV if you don't have a tuner box.
    Once you have more than 3 sources for digital, you will need a new receiver or a switch box.

    Course, if you don't have an HD tuner box then the audio from the TV or tuner box can use be analog.

    FFF, Am I missing something here? Where did he say that he needed PS3 and Wii?

    I was just showing him an example of my setup because I don't have an HDMI receiver either.

    Thanks guys. I've got an HD tuner (DirectTV) that will be in the setup as well. A new reciever would make it simpler but $500 is not in the cards right now. I wish these damn Onkyos would just die so I would have a valid excuse to tell my wife.
