Question about a MkII.

I'm posting this under Electronics because its where I commonly see the term. But what exactly does the the "MkII" designation refer to? I see it on items that are powered (subwoofers, amps, etc.) normally. Is it a rating, a type of material or what?

Just curious.

    Mark 2 or Mark II

    usually a second version of an amp or some such.
