I'm in the position where I can trade a old surround system that I'm not using for an Xbox 360 that has been modified to play games that have been burned on to DVD-R's and I think I read somewhere that if your xbox has been modified you cant play online with it , is that the case?

If the person flashed the drive before it was ever connected to Live, then you might be okay... for a while. New detections for modded hardware are released with each update they do. If they connected to Live then flashed the drive later, Microsoft can tell that the drive has been modified. At that point, they would ban your console from Live by its serial number.
In fairness, you shouldn't really be openly discussing illegal activities here. Software piracy is a crime.Equipment list:

Hey Casey, I think you should try and snag and XBOX 360 anyways with the prices dropping the way they are so you can join the ranks with the rest of us online when they finally release COD-MW2.:D It's one hell of a good time when a bunch of us manage to get into a clan together and start waxing the other teams a$$.:D Just a thought!;)Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!!

And if he can't get online?
Then he should stop trying to be a Cheater McCheatypants and actually pay the game developers for all their hard work. Just sayin'.Equipment list:

And if he can't get online?
I'm saying go out and purchase a new XBOX, not a modded XBOX. I would think if he didn't have high speed internet he wouldn't be asking about getting online in the first place. Just saying.Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!! -
Buying a modified XBOX 360 depends on what you want to use it for. If you're an online player, I wouldn't risk it. If you get caught, you just paid $50 for a year subscription and you won't get a refund, and you're banned from xbox live.
If you like playing RPG, or any story modes only games, then modifying the XBOX would be to your benefit. Playing "back-up" copies of games saves you a ton of $$$.
I have heard that there are some mod-chips out there that are online safe.Samsung LN52A850 (52" 1080P LCD TV) | RTi A9's (Fronts) | Csi A6(Center) | FXi A6 (Rear Surrounds) | SVS PB12-NSD (Sub) | Oppo BDP-103 | Panamax M5300-PM

I never said it was right. I was just providing some information to help his decision if he did trade his old surround sound system for a modified xbox 360.
EDIT: Basing on what I said, my assumption was to think he knew it was illegal.Samsung LN52A850 (52" 1080P LCD TV) | RTi A9's (Fronts) | Csi A6(Center) | FXi A6 (Rear Surrounds) | SVS PB12-NSD (Sub) | Oppo BDP-103 | Panamax M5300-PM
