I have an Onkyo 606 and a Sharp Aquos BDHP20U player hooked up through hdmi and can't seem to get the hd lights to light up on my onkyo. Am I not getting HD sound? Can I? If so how?

Are you bitstreaming or running LPCM out of your player? I
f you are using LPCM, then the only lights you will see is multich PCM. Only bitstreaming will show the codec being used.
"Bump" is just a post to bring the thread back to the top of the "recent posts" list.

Slinger, I bumped a bunch of threads last weekend, because some a-hole had posted **** threads, and they were showing as the prominent thread from the main page.

If I set my player to PCM then my player is doing the decoding, right? Then I do have HD sound? I tried to set it to bitstream but couldn't get any of the codec indicators to light up.

I looked at your player specs and it apparently decodes Dolby True HD. No mention of DTS HD-MA. So, assuming your player can decode the HD soundtrack, then setting it to LPCM would mean your player is doing the decoding.
Using bitstream out of your player, the receiver is doing the decoding and you should be able to see it on the display of the 606.
If it is receiving LPCM the display reads "Multich".
If it is receiving say Dolby True HD (via bitstream) the display will show "True HD"
Be sure you have selected the appropriate soundtrack in the disk menu as some discs will default to a "core" or regular DD or DTS soundtrack and the Hi Def track must be explicitly selected.

The Onkyo 606 will decode the HiDef sound tracks so I "always" bitstream via HDMI

Sounds like your player cannot bitstream (which surprises me). So you just need to be sure you are selecting the right soundtrack from the disc menu. The receiver should display multich PCM.

Beyond that, you may want to head over to AVS forums and post your question there in the thread dedicated to your player. I am unsure what else to tell you. Best of luck.

Thanks. After going through that huge thread it seems my player is pretty dated though only 2 years old. Which I kind of figured it was one of sharps first BD players and it came free with my TV. BD player is on my short list of upgrades for my HT but not till after new fronts and sub. Definitely enjoying my new hobby thanks in large part to this forum and the helpful people on it.
