The Outlaw 950 may be the best sub $1,000 pre/pro out there.

What's that opinion based on?

Conversations with a couple of folks that have one, Outlaw's reputation for building a quality product, reviews:

If you notice I used the word MAY. Donald can order it, try it out, and if he doesn't like it send if back."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

I did see the MAY. I haven't heard any of the high end pre/pro's and I just wanted to know a little more in depth about your opinion. I might be in the market for an AV preamp soon (which really means that I want one but dont have the cash)

You should read this before buying the 950.

I had read about that latest problem. It seems that they have already located it and it is a software issue that is fixable with a software upgrade without having to return the unit. I have been thinking about the 950/7100 combo for some time this fall so it was another concern for me. I am impressed with Outlaw's customer service and the way they address problems when they arise. I know when the hiss issues arose when the 950 was first released they were willing to take any unit back no questions asked even beyond thier 30 day return period. This excellent customer service is why I would consider doing business with Outlaw and other companies like SVS and one of the reasons I am a fan of Polk speakers."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

In addition to the Outlaw, I know that Adcom offers a GTP-830 preamp. Not sure what retail is but I've seen them on Ebay for around $850. I'd also recommend browsing Audiogon's classified section. You may find a great deal on a used pre/pro.My setup :

Sony DVP-NC650V 5-disc DVD/SACD
Microsoft XBox
