On my tfm-35 theres a range button and when I hit it once the needle that shows the watts being used and such is much more active. When I hit it again its back to being less active. Is the less active one showing the big range of watts and the more the small range or do I have it backwards or completely wrong?

Usually one setting is for low volume perhaps 1 to 10 watts, then the other setting is for 10 to 250 watts or some variation on that. It's really so that you can watch the needles jump even at low volume. My Kenwood KA-9100 has range 1 to 10 watts and then 10 to 120 watts. My TFM-25 has no range adjust.

Most people just like watching the needle just, but it would be very helpful if you were testing the output of the amp at 1 watt or something like that were you needed to see that number.

One setting shows the power at 1/10 and the other shows at true level. If you listen to your amp at low levels and like to see the needles jump around then push in the button.
