Saw an infomercial for a DVD collection of shows. Has anyone seen these, and any comment on the quality?

Maybe this should be a separate thread, but kind of like one of those Ginger or Mary Ann questions:

The Midnight Special

Don Kirshner's Rock Concert

Which did you like best?

    I always thought In Concert (simulcast in stereo on KLOS here in SoCal) was the better show but it was largely dependent on who the performers were.

    I don't think I ever saw Midnight Special. And the only thing I remember of Rock Concert, was seeing Rick Derringer on one episode, while wasted on acid:eek::p

    I know what you mean, I used to look forward to both each week, only to be let down sometimes by who was performing, and occasionally by the performance itself. Unfortunately in my local no one was simulcasting, and only had the TV speaker anyway so it didn't matter much.:(
    For the most part though I would have to give the nod to In Concert as well. I guess because it more times than not had performers more in line with my musical taste.

    Midnight Special had pretty craptastic quality when it was on the air so I don't think the DVD's are going to be all that much better. They can clean it up a bit but masterings of live events are only so good. Beyond that you're pretty much stuck with an almost early color TV's "patina" of sorts, like that of the shadowy black and white films from the American "film noir" period of the 40's and 50's. It adds character to the show. Kind of like the recorded laughing and applause tracks on The Muppet Show which honestly would lose much of the appeal if it was still missing.

    Maybe we are old:eek::D

    I was young enough I could not do the bar scene or even concerts, so this was my first and only (at the time) opportunity to see live performances of the music I enjoyed, so it really filled a gap for me.

    I never watched it, as it was a bit before my time. But whenever I hear it mentioned, I always think of the opening scene from Twilight Zone: The Movie.

    You want to see something REALLY scary?
    I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

    I always watched both as a kid for exactly the same reason.;)

    Having said that, I have actually seen many of the MS DVD's and they suck for the most part. Usually one or two good performances per disc with the rest being filler crap. I wouldn't waste my money.

    Granted, it was "acceptable" at the time, and the laws of crap in crap out will apply, or they could have really cheaped out and crap in even worse crap out. Just curious as to which might be the case. I usually do not like to get involved with these arrangements that have a monthly commitment tied to them, but thought it might be entertaining in a retro kind of way.

    Thanks, that was what I wanted to avoid. Maybe sometime in the future something better will come along.
