Had a little scare this morning. After making some toast I went in the other room (with said toast) to get on the computer. I start to smell this burning bread smell. Run out to the kitchen and smoke is bellowing out of the toaster. The "arm" that pops the toast up didn;t release all the way and the toaster stayed in "toast" mode. Well all the crumbs in the bottom as well as the outer plactice case got hot and started smoldering.

WOW does it stink...........burnt crumbs and melting plastic....putrid!!! No flames or sparks just lots of acrid smoke. Unplugged it quick and made a run for the deck with the smoking toaster in my hands, left it on the patio table to "burn" itself out -lol.

Anyways the toaster was on the counter right under the wooden kitchen cabinets. Now that cabinet smells like burnt toast and plastic......very acrid. What can I clean the wood cabinet with to get rid of the nasty smell. I'm sure eventually in a month or so it will go away on its own..........but right now it's nauseating.

IIRC, treitz3 does damage restoration. You can try shooting him a pm?
The only thing I can think of is lemon oil, not Pledge. The acidity in the oil might neutralize the smell?

I use Zorbe from Lowes. It has no smell and eliminates really bad odors. For example, I had some old boxes that smelled like a cat pee'd on them, really bad. Sprayed with Zorbe and the next day the boxes had absolutely no smell whatsoever. (This was really bad, too).

Edit: BTW, always unplug appliances when done with them. That was really silly leaving it plugged in. Suppose you were running out the door with toast in hand, you wouldn't have a house when you got back.

Thanks MM, and usually if I am running out the door I always unplug the toaster and coffee maker. When I'm home and not leaving, I don't tend to do that; although I do sometimes.

Washer level control (for filling the drum with water) on my washing machine stopped working a few weeks ago and I have upstairs laundry and I caught it before it could make a huge mess. I can't imagine what would have happened if I started the load and left.

I never run the dishwasher or washer/dryer when I'm not at home. I don't even like to make coffee while I take a shower. I don't trust a lot of home appliances to be left unattended, everything is so cheaply made these days.....you never know.

Several years ago on New Years Day my son and I had done some cleaning and the portable dishwasher was running in the kitchen. I was on the computer which is in the room beside the kitchen. There is an opening so you can see right into the kitchen from where I sit at the comp desk. John (my son) was playing in the living room. I notice a lot more steam than usual coming from the dishwasher. I get up to investigate further and come around the corner into the kitchen. The front of the dishwasher is fully engulfed in flame!!! The steam I saw was smoke and it was filling the place fast. I yell at my son to go to the bedroom now and close the door and open the window but be prepared to run outside. He's yelling what's wrong? I tell him just do it now and I'll explain in a minute.

Now you have to understand I didn't send him straight outside because it was middle of winter and was minus 15 celsius at the time with snow on the ground. I unplugged the dishwasher but still had the fire burning. I was lucky I had a very large stainless steel bowl filled with water beside the sink. The air was getting unbreathable with all the electrical plastic burning. I poured the water on the front of the dishwasher and doused most of the flames but this created a massive steam/smoke plume that was rapidly filling the house. I ran to the bathroom and got another bowlful of water and doused the rest of the fire. Now it was just a mass of smoldering melted plastic and exposed burnt wires. I grabbed John's and my winter coats and boots and the car keys. I got him dressed for outside and then opened all the windows in the apartment and we left for an hour or so.

When we came back the smoke was clear but the place was freezing and smelled awful. The dishwasher got tossed and there was some damage to the linoleum under where the dishwasher had been but no other significant damage. I just shudder to think of the result if we hadn't been there. Oh, I had a nasty cough for a day or so too. My son suffered no ill effects other than being scared. I have a very healthy respect/fear of electrical appliances now.

That would be scary. I do have a fairly large kitchen extinguisher, but the few times I've had a "fire" type scare.....panic sets in and I would probably forget if it's still under the sink or in the pantry. Today I just wanted to get the smoking toaster outside to keep from smelling up the place. I'm surprised the toaster doesn;t have an auto shut off if it gets to hot even if the pop up arm doesn;t fully release. Perhaps new toasters do.

I just don't use the bloody bread toaster anymore. Too many problems in the past.

I have a small toaster oven which I sometimes used to toast breads in. The pop-up type bread toaster usually are very troublesome when they gets old.

As for the smell, I think diluted pine sol (or) a wipe with baking powder liquid would get rid of the smell fast if you can stand the smell of pine sol. May be some natural air deodorizer could help too.

The smoke will permeate into the walls also, so it's not an easy fix. However-

Hit the bottom shelf with a wire brush, use a de-greaser like Simple Green stuff on a cloth, then when that dries brush on some oil-based Killz. Open a window if the oil smell gets bad.

Sorry to here about your "adventure" today Heiney. Definitely not something that you would want to happen to anybody. Are the wooden cabinets painted, stained or does it have a layer of polyurethane on them?

Oh, in the meantime, get some activated charcoal and place it spread out in something like a large cookie sheet that has edges. The entire box. This will help to absorb the odor in the room until we figure out the best plan of attack to get back to normal.

    The Mariner

    or

The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.......I forget the *exact* title.

    H9

P.s. Used some Simple Green and it's much better. It really isn't as bad as I initially thought. Thanks everyone

New toaster is on the way, Brock!
John30's idea is good one. Tom's as well. Just don't light the charcoal and try to grill steaks inside. You'll be back to square one if you do.

My neighbor house 2 doors down lost her entire kitchen to a toaster, when she was not home. The entire kitchen when up in flames. Fire department said it was due to the toaster. They said to always unplug all small appliances when not in use.

You're lucky you were at home. Lesson learned, always unplug all small electronic devices when not in use.

IF you're all about a toaster, get a die-cast one that's a metal body and won't fumigate your place with melting plastic.......

And if you people don't have an UP TO DATE fire extinguisher, then you're playing a game you might not be aware of........
