I have recently bought new speakers: RT55i, f/x300i and CS245i. I am looking around the 1k rahge and was looking at the Denon AVR3802 and Onkyo797 but I am unsure which one will work best with the speakers. I listen to music as much as I watch movies.

    Hello,

You should check out www.audioreview.com if you haven't already, reviews posted by consumers there are generally pretty good, and they get many comments on HT gear.

May I make a suggestion for another brand name to consider?

If you have a Marantz dealer nearby, you might want to take a look at their A/V receivers. They just revamped their line, and the 7000 and 8000 receivers are now being discounted from their original $750-950 prices.

The replacement for the 7000 and 8000 is the 7200, but according to reviews, the 7000 or 8000 is the one to buy. Or the SR-19, which might not be too far above your price range.

Denon and Onkyo are also very respectable, it will probably come down to deciding which you like best. See if you can bring home demo units for home trials from your local dealers.

I occasionally drift over to the AudioReview website, but I really don't trust the stuff. People either really love it, or they really hate it.... just my opinion.

The best thing to do is get down to a local A/V retailer, and check out both of these receivers. Like everyone else says, let you ears decide. I haven't been able to find the 797 at any local stores, but I know that you can find them online.

As for the Denon, my cousin has the old 3801, and he thinks it's the greatest thing in the world. I actually think he spends more time with the receiver than he does with his wife. Kind of sad, but I guess the important stuff comes first... Good Luck!

I thank both Joelll and mjk91383 for your reply. But it all comes down to what sounds best to me in my listening enviroment. Now on top of adding the Marantz to my list I am going to add the Integra series by Onkyo also. I am going to listen to listen to the Integra's and Denon's line tonight to hopfully get a good idea which brand to go with. I am still looking for a Marantz merchant to go to. If I can not find one near me then that will make my decision for me.

I know that Marantz has a fine reputation, but there is a bit of a controversy regarding their most recent receiver, the SR7200. It seems that in the current issue of Sound & Vision a review was written that was very critical of this receiver. The issue is being hotly debated in a couple of home theater forums. Here's one:

    S&V tests the Marantz SR7200

The main problem is that although rated as 105 watts per channel, it's output was measured at 27 watts when all six channels were driven at 8 ohms at 1 kHz.

Many people think it was a defective receiver that was not tested by Marantz before being sent to the reviewer. Many are waiting to for Marantz's response and for the "dust to clear" before purchasing this new receiver.

    Hi again...

Absolutely, positively, the best choice for your gear is the one that sounds best and works best for you (setup, controls, etc) when installed in the environment where it will be used. This is why going to a quality audio store which allows home trials is such a great thing, and the support they give is often worth the added cost of doing business with them.

    With regard to Audioreview:

Of course many of the reviews are written by people who either love or hate the equipment being reviewed. however, with a little time, and enough reviews on a certain item, one can usually find some good information that isn't available elsewhere. It's just another resource, and just like most other Internet audio resources, including this forum, it's neither definitive or unbiased. But it is free, and there are many, many postings worth reading.

That said, the problem with the power output of the Marantz 7200 showed up on audioreview, too. Though I like their past few years of a/v receivers, when they looked like they'd really started putting some effort in, it sounds like there's some kind of problem with the 7200's that people have bought and taken home. So it appears to not be just Sound & Vision's test unit; I'm sure that there will be more testing by other organizations after such a brouhaha as a published unfavorable review.

    Hi NB

Have a look and listen to the Pioneer Elite VSX37tx and 39tx. You will be surprised. Dollar for dollar I believe the Pioneer is the top choice in their price range and maybe somewhat above.
