Ok,

Moved out to the country and now I am looking for internet access. At the moment I have nothing. I am actually typing this on my lunch break at work. I have tried all the local companies and all of the national one I can think of. Anyone know of any companies that specialize in broadband for country folk for less than $80 a month?

Satelite broadband, i think its called roadrunner in our area, but you won't be doing any online gaming etc, but the throughput is fast, it just has a high amount of latency (time between clicking and getting what you want) so FPS games etc won't work well, but downloads etc are fast.

A online search shows SKYWAY for 30 a month, and going up based on what speed you want. You do have to buy the equipment though.

    I just checked DTV's website. It's $200.00 for the equipt., + $20.00 for S&H fees. Then it's $40.00/ month for 12 months. Offer ends 9/30/09

    Look for a wisp...

Here in oklahoma where we don't have cable or DSL, someone usually runs a trunk out to their site and sets up a tower. From there they beam a form of wi-max to homes with antennas you usually mount on your roof or in your attic. It's not the fastest in the world, but it's faster than satellite without the latency. I think I hit 4mbit or so out at my client's house, with about a 30ms latency, which isn't horrible.

I have DishNetwork/Hughes Wildblue sat internet at my farm. $70 a month and really few complaints. It's fast enough I can run my Roku box and get good picture and loading on movies and TV shows. A good rain storm and heavy clouds can mess with it, and I learned to run a heat tape on the back of the dish to keep all the ice and snow melted off in the winter.

I was initially on Hughes DirecPC years ago, its now Direcway. Then I moved over to WildBlue, had very good luck with them, the download speeds were amazing on it. There is a slight lag when you click on a link before things start loading but once it starts its fast.

So about your only two viable/reliable options for Satellite is Direcway and Wildblue. Be sure and check around for your Wireless options too as that's what I am on now. I have an antennae pointed at cell tower about 9 miles away. Works great.....

    Did Hughes buy Wildblue??

Its through our local telephone company. You'll just have to check around in your area to see if you can grab something off of a tower, talk to the neighbors, ask around town, etc....

Check with your electric cooperative. They have or be partnered with a high-speed wireless company. My employer is partnered with Wi-Power here in southern Arizona.
