Since this is non audio decided it belonged here instead of the Electronics thread.

Long story short I have an elderly mom who loves her independence and living alone.
Problem : she is starting to get forgetful and has left her stove on at least 2 times we are aware of and boiled pans dry.

My sisters and brother are not ready for the battle she will give when we "suggest" she move in with one of us, and other than this safety concern feel she can continue with her apartment no problem.

Question : Has anyone (especially you members from the North Country) heard of this company or product?

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear about the problems with mom.....I've haven't seen this product or any like it. Looks like a interesting device, but any control of this nature can only provide limited protection.

Have you looked into a meals on wheels program, where Mom wouldn't have to do any heavy cooking? Just pop it in the microwave with no need to use the stove.

If she uses hot water (for tea, instant soups, oatmeal, etc.) you could have an instant hot water dispenser installed at the kitchen sink, so she wouldn't need the stove for boiling water.

    Just a few suggestions.

It really sucks when the ones you love have trouble taking care of themselves. Our family is going through this now also.

    Regards

jimmyd, thanks for the reply, we do have a program where hot meals are delivered, but it's once a day and some days she does not like what is on the menu. My sister and I have discussed having her plan her days when she likes the hot meals and then we take turns having her eat with us or taking her dishes. But again this has its limitations as to effectiveness in her not using the stove. Never saw anything about the instant hot water dispenser but will be looking into it later tonight.

    Again thanks

Here's a link to an ISE instant hot, I've installed many of these and this is a good price.

    Good luck

appears the device will still need to be tweaked with the knowledge of the user...

Stove Guard must be tested with the Individual who requires this device and adjusted to their personal needs, as well as adjusted to the home environment to ensure proper functioning. Additional fire safety devices such as smoke detectors and fire extinguishers must also be used to ensure complete cooking fire safety.

It gets tough dealing with these issues. One trick that may help is to remove all the knobs except one. Move it around to the eye or oven. That way only one eye or oven can be used at one time. Prevents turning the wrong one on.

I don't see this as a problem we would have to go over the parameters with her and set it up to her preferences (knowing my mom numerous times) AC powered smoke detector is there. Not sure if an extinguisher would do my mom much good, but something to think about.

    Thanks for the suggestions jvc

Thanks Polker, sounds like a good idea for a fast result. Will get a little piece of mind until we can implement something closer to 100% fool proof.

I don't know about the stove thing because we don't allow Mom to touch the stove anymore. In fact, if she is going to be alone for any real period we make sure she has meals ready for the microwave and take out the fuse to the stove.

On another note, she did used to forget her medicine or get her pills wrong. We invested in this pill machine and it works great. If you have a medicine dispensing need this is a good choice.
