Sony Str DA-2400es and Polk TSI

The update bug bit me, since I have more than one device that runs using HDMI I needed a new receiver that could do hdmi switching, upconversion and also have the power to push my TSI500 towers. for reference i am coming from a lowly pioneer vsx 516k which is a pretty decent receiver for mid sized to small rooms and it actually was able to push my TSI towers pretty hard. May its soul rest in peace now!

Looked all over the web for reviews on good entry/mid range receivers, 400-700$ was my budget...with all the bells and whistles, especially needed pre amps so that I can use an external amp when needed. Shortlisted to the following four receivers Yamaha RX-V765, Onkyo SR-607, Denon 1910, Sony strda2400es and then went about around town to the various BM/local audio stores to see if they carried these.

The Onkyo was on the lower end of the spectrum had 5 hdmi inputs...can be got for about 350$ on the web, the sony was at the top end of the budget with retail of about 800$ with 4 hdmi inputs so was very apprehensive about it. From all the reviews on the web the onkyo SR-607 seemed to be a champ. both yamaha and onkyo sounded about equal!, the problem was the upconversion through both the receivers looked pretty bad to me compared to directly going to the TV, what is the point in having good sound if your picture is going to look crappy on your big screen TV for which you paid a lot more.....so i moved on......Went to a different store and listened to the denon 1910...this was the best sounding receiver of the lot...but again was a let down in the video department....if you are not planning on any upscaling through the receiver go pick this one up...kick **** audio performance.

In my case I have a Wii and a PS2 (still love the thing) which definitely need up conversion through the receiver. So just went to a different store and wallah the sony str DN1000 proved to be the champ in video conversion. The picture looked amazing and the sound was great..it did not have pre amps though and i was not sure about the power ratings on this one. I am not sure why sony receivers get the bashing they do in all the forums:confused: , i guess its just a being sony issue. This got me thinking about the str da2400es..it is the lower end model of the sonys elite line..so took the risk and bought it online...and got it for a steal at 530$..thanks to bing cashback and buy.com.

got it home and the first thing i noticed was that this thing is heavy...checked the specs and it weighs 26 pounds!! powered it on...connected the HDMI to the TV and a very clean and intuitive GUI menu pops up...sony just went crazy in designing this. Auto Callibration was amazingly simple...it has 3 listening position auto callibration. The whole process for one position took about a minute. It set all the distances perfectly...i measured with a tape and saw that it was correct within inches. Once it came back I saw that it set all my speakers as large. I went in the manual set up and set up the proper crossover frequency for the sub.

Video performance is super...Wii/PS2 in 1080p look great. Also I love the way you can assign audio and video inputs and also rename the inputs. there are countless options for audio and EQ settings..have barely scratched the surface there. I moved on to test the performance and things started going bad....i got the volume up to -40db...the speakers sounded weak...hmmmm...increased it to -20db and the system came alive...that is good:)..plenty loud...but still at -20db on my pioneer i would be holding my ear as it would be straining and putting out very loud levels. I was very puzzled ...this is supposed to be an elite amp and i was expecting a little bit more ooomph........ so switched off the source and kept increasing the volume.....this thing is crazy....it kept going up past 0db and then maxed out at +23db.....!!! my pioneer would be dead by the time i pushed it to -1db

I dont know why sony did this...but i just realized that i had more bandwidth for my room than i would ever need...3000cu ft space. the amps rating of 100w RMS/channel might be actually be true and i will probably never find out inside my home.... im guessing it will put out at a good 50-60w RMS when all the channels are being driven. My TSI500s/ CS20 sound amazing now that i have a good amp behind them. The RC60i's just scream and sound fantastic with surround effects.

Overall I totally love the sony + polk TSI combo.....Kudos to Sony for hitting this one out of the park. Will post the pics soon.

These numbers mean nothing. They are just how the manufacturer labels the volume. Did you ever see "Spinal Tap" where the best amp goes to 11?

I have not seen that :D .......but i just thought it was universal that 0db meant reference......to where most music and movies are mixed to. well i guess what you say that numbers mean anything holds true!

So does my Polk PSW-1000. It shows somebody at those companies is a Spinal Tap fan. ;)
