There was a Michael Crichton (RIP) book about similar technology called "Prey". I enjoyed the book, just keep in mind it's science FICTION :)

I saw something about this on cable. There were a lot of ethical questions, but they were mostly about the NEXT evolution, nanotechnology, where they basically make these things on a molecular scale.

Yes...it may be fiction...but Crichton is one of those writers that does tons of research and incorporates lots of facts and technical detail into his fiction. Plausible fiction for lack of a better term.

BTW he was one of my favorite authors. I read every new book as soon as it came out. I will miss his work.

As will I. Majorly bummed that he's not with us anymore.

ANd yes, he was very good in making his fiction, as you say, plausible, which made it that much easier to get sucked into believing it was more than fiction. This came into play especially when he came out with his book about global warming conspiracy -- State of Fear -- which was obvioulsy fiction despite having real fact in it. Yes there are skeptical scientists on the topic of global warming, yes it's a huge industry, but that doesn't mean the actual narrative is true :)

If you do some research on global warming you will find some of Crichton's data from State of Fear to be solid science. Yes it was fiction...but with some definite basis in fact. Hell...a lot of science is fiction that is based on some fact...as is politics.

For example Jurassic Park has often been mentioned as one of the science fiction movies that is actually possible in real life.
