Need Help/Advice on Audiogon Deal

So I bought a receiver from a guy on audiogon. He has perfect feedback but only a few transactions. He's been pretty good to deal with so far.

Anyway, the receiver arrived (with less than adequate packing for a 50+ pound receiver) and the right channel isn't working correctly. sound comes out of it but it's really faint. you have to put your ear up to the speaker to hear anything and there is a bit of static. (blown fuse maybe?)

I told him this and he offers to give me a refund and I can send it back. Only he wants me to send it back to him so he can compare it to photos that he has and verify the serial number. Then he would refund my money. he said he's had someone try to swap out parts before from his working unit to their non-working unit and then return his as broken.

I'm not exactly comfortable with that. is that how it usually works? I've never had something wrong with a piece when I got it.

I think that it sounds reasonable,, I was involved in a similar situation, where I suspected the buyer of sheninigans,,had him ship it back then I refunded his monies. Good luck.
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

I've done quite a bit of selling and buying online. Only got burned once about 8 years ago. What he is asking is reasonable. He will not give you a refund while being empty handed. I would do the same if I was him.
You could try getting a quote to repair it, and ask for a refund for that amount...

    just my .02
    Good Luck!
