    I saw it.

It was alright. I was expecting a different kind of vibe. Almost a "Big Lebowski" kind of surreal vibe. But instead it came off more like it was parodying itself. I was disappointed. Jeff Bridges and Ewan McGregor did excellent jobs with their parts. Kevin Spacey was pretty good too. But George Clooney, I think he was the reason the movie was just so-so and not better. He was cast quite well, he just stunk up the movie with acting that was decent enough but a little too over-the-top.

All in all, a silly movie. It drags in parts but it was fun for the most part. But if you are expecting the typical Coen Bros. eclectic genius, they missed the mark a bit on this one.

    "Brother Buzz Movie Review" gives MWSAG ..... "4 Buds " !!! :)

(synch to early Pink Floyd and .... it's awesome !!!)

Son saw it today, and said it was very good, worth a rent at least but not worth buying. That translates into 3 out of 4 stars.

It's on my rent list and possibly the "buy" if the review from the rent is good. This movie is intended to be a spoof of some the crazy crap the military has investigated in the past. Sounds like good entertainment on the lighter side of things that spoofs a more serious edge.

The Clooney and Bridges team up seems interesting, provided that netither act this spoof too seriously.

The movie is based on the book by Jon Ronson documented by the research John Sargeant did with the U.S military. Crazy stuff. This is from Wikepedia:

The Men Who Stare at Goats (2004) is a book by Jon Ronson based on research by John Sergeant[1] about the U.S. Army's exploration of New Age concepts and the potential military applications of the paranormal. The title refers to attempts to kill goats by staring at them.

The book examines connections between paranormal military programs and psychological techniques being used for interrogation in the War on Terror. The book traces the evolution of these covert activities over the past three decades, and sees how they are alive today within U.S. Homeland Security and U.S. occupied Iraq. It examines the use of the theme tune to Barney & Friends on Iraqi prisoners-of-war, the smuggling of a hundred de-bleated goats into the Special Forces command center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and the connection between the U.S. military and the mass-suicide of members of the Heaven's Gate cult in San Diego

I thought it was mostly garbage- except for the fact that it's true. Also it's basically lifted from a 2005 documentary, possibly with the same title, but with the real people.

I read that the documentary was based off of Sargeant"s research.I agree,it sounded like garbage to me but from all accounts it is true. I would of liked to have seen that documenatry. I have also heard that Sargeant was hired as a consultant for the movie but do not know this for sure.

    Well,just found this:
The book accompanies a three-part TV series broadcast on Channel 4 in Britain, Crazy Rulers of the World. The three parts were titled "The Men Who Stare at Goats", "Funny Torture" and "Psychic Footsoldiers" respectively. The idea of the project was to explore "the apparent madness at the heart of U.S. military intelligence." The series discusses and includes members of Psychological operations, First Earth Battalion, and also discusses Project MKULTRA and Frank Olson, including interviews with his son, Eric Olson.

Ronson dedicated his book to journalist and filmmaker John Sergeant, who worked intensely through 2003 and 2004 on the original documentary. However, Sergeant has not received any credit for his part in formulating what is the basis for this movie.[

I do believe zombieboy2000 is correct.

    Directed by
    Grant Heslov

    Writing credits
    Peter Straughan (screenplay)

    Jon Ronson (book)

Probably a good reason why it's missing the typical Coen Bros. eclectic genius that I mentioned.

I still think I'll give this one a try. It should be mildly entertaining at the very least. I hear there's enough Star Wars references to get a few solid chuckles.

I'm very wary of George Clooney movies any more...he's made one pos movie after another for quite a while. Having said that, the previews look interesting but I don't think I would purchase it..however I might rent it with a lot of trepidation.

Rent is cheap and I will readily do that, provided that the general nature of the movie has my interest. "Buy" is an entirely different story altogether ... new (especially), used or "new" on the 2nd or 3rd tier market. Then I personally really like the movie or the price is right for me to want to add to my collection.

Watched it last night and thought it was fairly amusing. Certainly, it entertained from start to finish. I wouldn't own it, but a worthy rental.

I finally got around to seeing it last night and was very disappointed knowing that it was a spoof going into to the movie. It was just done wrong. No introduction as to why Clooney's side kick was there all along. The the parodies of the military into that research was too far fetched. The list could go on and on.

I thought Clooney's acting was on par. However, he is a pro and is ultimately limited to the script that he must follow. It seems that he made the best of what he had to work with.

In total, it does not make my re-rent list again ... and forget "buy" in the wally world bargain bin too. I'll see it there in a couple of years.
