Thermal Vision

So I work for an electric utility and it dawned on me just suddenly that we use a technology in the field I'm surprised hasn't been used (or discussed) here at Club Polk: Thermo-Vision. Infrared imaging, etc.
The premise is simple: Infrared imaging is used to detect points along a system (or component) that suggest component failure.
Comments?

Do you hear that buzzing noise?

Are you saying that power lines and stereo components are similar enough that a device which can detect heat from a part that has thousands of amps going through it can also differentiate between the heat of a hi-fi device, and the slight increase in temperature of a potential failing part?Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes
Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables
Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
Three 20 amp circuits. -
Maybe they're not popular is because they are $10K:eek:
And that's the price on Amazon!I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE! -

Thermal Vision, Infrared Imaging; etc. has already been widely used many fields. It could be used to finding the high failure parts due to heat related stressing in the high power amplifiers but I don't see how it could be used in any speaker design yet. May be we can use thermal imaging to see the voice coil reactions during the cold temperature and during playing to see how high heat cause voice coil to choke and increase distortion?
May be we just need X-Ray vision to watch the speakers dancing to the tune during playing.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin:
