Anybody remember M&K speakers?

This forum got me looking thru old boxes and storage (I found lots of old Polk, Adcom, SAE and dbx literature in the process), and I forgot about an old pair of M&K Satellite II's and a Volkswoofer III that I put in the storage closet many years ago ( i bought them in 8/1981--I actually found the very-faded receipt).

Anyway, the woofer (6-1/2" diameter) on the satellites buzzes. It looks like some of the materials just got too brittle and dried out after all these years.

Does anyone know of a repacement cross-reference? It has to be an exact fit for diameter and hole pattern, because of the way they are mounted.

There's no brand on it. Just a serial number (Maybe M&K made their own drivers; I forget).

Nice to see an M&K thread here! I bought a couple of M&K V2B subs about 5 years ago and just had a local man refoam them both for about $50.00, much cheaper than buying new drivers, lol. I'm not sure how old these subs are, but they sound good now and should last many years.(Hopefully) I'm not sure if M&K made their own drivers or not and I thought I saw somewhere online that someone is or was trying to keep the M&K line back??? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah! I didn't know that could be done. One of the reasons I retired my M&K's was that the foam surround on the Volkswoofer-III has cracks in it, and has just deformed overall. It doesn't feel brittle to the touch, I guess because there's some rubbery coating on the foam that mainly holds it together. But it wouldn't crack if it hasn't deteriorated internally.

The hard thing to know is whether the foam surround is the only age-related problem with the driver (or with the internal amplifier for that matter).

It's probably not worth much, even without any problems. Might be more fun just to rebuild it. The cabinet seems very well constructed.

Maybe I'll strip off the black laminate film covering the subwoofer box and re-cover it with...Bubinga, of course!

    Polkie2009,
You wouldn't happen to want to sell one of those V-2b's would you?

I'll probably hang on to them. One of the amps needs work, not sure what's wrong with it,comes on, just has no output. Took the plate amp off and didn't see anything burned up so I don't know. Figured maybe I could find another cheap used plate amp for 20 or 30 bucks. The other sub works fine though. The V-2B's pop up occasionally on fleabay.

The original drivers were available directly from M&K until the closed shop, so I always assumed they were custom made. There may be a suitable replacement for them however as they didn't seem to be exotic or unique. Parts Express was selling M&K branded subwoofers a few months backs in their buyout section, so they still may be available.
