Don't let the roadcase scare you. They are racked to prevent damage. I never took either of these on the road.

Unusual? Yes.....read on.....

The Phase Linear 400....

Modded by a Yale professor with 6 large Mallory output caps neatly attached in a frame on the back. As I understand the story, this professor modded these for use with Acoustat electrostats. I bought the amp some years ago in a package deal with a pair of Acoustat 4's. Word is that the professor sold these modded 400's back in the day. If anyone has any further background, I'd love to hear about it. I did get an email some years ago from a guy who had the twin to this one.....I have no idea how many were done. The amps sounds great, effortless bass and lots of reserve current due to the mods.

$250

The bottom amp: Dunlap-Clarke Dreadnought 500.

These were made in the late 70's in Waltham, Massachusetts. Dunlap designed the circuit, Dr. Clarke was the "money guy". Topology resembles Levinson of the same era. 250W/channel. I did a bit of work to this to bring it back up to snuff. The inside reads like a roster of Massachusetts manufacturers. Sprague, Carol Cable, etc. Meters have been sun bleached a bit. The amp sounds very good, and is fairly rare.

$200

In person sale. Hear them prior to purchase and pickup in Central Massachusetts only. No shipping, sorry. Basically testing the water here. I'm not using them regularly. I'm not going to pack and ship. If they go locally....that's great....if not, they can stay for me to play. :D

Best,

Paul

First off, I'm not thread crapping, my post should actually help the sale of this fine amp. I thought it was just plain weird that two of these would pop up in one day! I'm always checking out my local Craigslist (as should you all ;) ), and saw the same amp, similar mods and everything. The only thing not similar is the price:

500 vs 250? That makes this an awesome value! If I was in the market for a 2 channel amp I'd jump all over this one!!

It is unusual due to the mods done by the professor. I've never seen another one like it in the flesh, although I know it is not the only one he did.

I'll take a shot of the back of the amp and the capacitor bank tomorrow and add it to the thread. Bank of 6 big blue mallory caps about 3" in diameter and aprox 6" long!

I know this thread is a little old at this point ... however I was curious as to if you still had the dreadnought 500? My Dad is actually the Dunlap of Dunlap and Clarke who designed this amp. I am always trying to find his amps whenever I see them online for sale. Let me know. Thanks.

Hey DunlaP_ClarkE -- I worked for your father at Dunlap Clarke from 1975-1977. I have several pieces of Dunlap Clarke equipment, some of which I'm willing to part with - given your particular interests. How do I contact you?

I was an original Polk dealer back in the 70's also was a Dunlop Clarke dealer as well. I have a Dunlop Clarke Dreadnaught 500 which is not working at this time. I used it to power my Koss Model One Electrostats since this was the amp used to design these speakers. If anyone is intersted I may be able to answer some questions and am thinking about parting with this incredible amp.
