decode new formats in your processor rather than an on old ps3 which did all decoding on board for the HD audio formats.

Nice update.

They didn't, now is a cheap looking matte finish. Also instead of the touch sensitive buttons they put actual (cheap looking) buttons.
But you can buy my mint <1yr. PS3 80Gig, with the Bluetooth remote and an HDMI cable.:D

That's the only negative with the current models. No bitstreaming

Internal ps3 decoding to PCM as an alternative lossless option works great. But for those who have to have the little lights on their receiver active, the slim's upgrade is good news...

With my Pioneer Sc-07 I noticed better SQ when having my receiver doing the decoding vs the BDP doing the decoding.

With certain AVRs, there are additional adjustments you have to make to the PCM to get the subwoofer level to play properly. The LFE channel is recorded at -10db. In the AVR, it is supposed to be automatically boosted +10db before being sent on to the amplifier. Some AVRs don't apply this boost to the PCM input and users often don't know they have to add the boost manually in their set-up options. So the playback sounds thin without the extra bass.

Properly set-up systems should sound fine with PCM input. But having the decoding done in the AVR eliminates having to worry if your system is applying the boost properly or not.

    Referring to clarity.

Well, if your LFE input is not calibrated properly, then perception of clarity will suffer. It's easy enough to test. Just bitstream the vanilla Dolby Digital option off a blu-ray. And if even that has more bass than player decoded TrueHD, then there is a problem with the LFE channel.

I already have a 40GB i got back in October of 2007; Thing has worked perfectly for the almost two years i've had it. My only gripe has been that I can't see the little lights glow on the receiver... completely neurotic, but... there you go.
