Big markup on net for OC 703

I have been researching the stuff to make some panels and it is so expensive on the net. I mean its just insulation. I found a supplier in Cleveland who said he can get it for $70.00 for about 12-2" 4'x2' panels. I think that is about what it should really cost. What kinds of deals have you guys found?

$70 for 12 seems like a very good deal to me.For some reason OC doesn't bring it north of the border so I use Roxul brand mineral wool which is relatively inexpensive.

Sounds like that would be heck of a price to me! About half the price normally quoted as a matter of fact. I tried to find some OC locally and gave up and ordered it off the web.

As to your wondering why it's so pricey? Don't know what to say to that other than it's the good stuff!! It gives you the potential to get the broader frequency treatment that you want and not just HF like the foam products.

I went with 2" 705 and don't regret either the expense of using OC or going with the 705 either. The time it took to build frames like I wanted, select and buy fabric, mount them and all. It's not a real quick project and you only want to do it once and do it well enough to not want to revisit it or try to set and listen to music while looking at something you don't like visually.

Tips I could pass along from my experience on them. The burlap fabric from a Joan's Fabrics works fine. Wrapping the corners to look nice is the hardest part. Stand the panel off from the wall and really get the benefit of the better LF absorbtion!! Don't use the big diameter screw-in-easy single point hangers that you can buy in a bubble pack from the hardware stores. Despite them showing enough weight handling, I found them all pulling out after a few months when they shouldn't have been!

Good luck with it. It's well worth the effort and saves a ton over premade.

Meh.

I'm in Canada as well and actually went with the Roxul 'Safe n Sound' because it has better midrange and high frequency absorption.

The OC wins when it comes to bass, Roxul wins in the midrange and up. I was having problems with reverberation with all these hard surfaces, so my decision was easy. Not to mention the Roxul is cheaper. I paid $30 for 8 pieces of 2' x 4'.

For bass, I'll play with sub position.

I think I paid $15 for 2" 705 and they sell 2" 703 for $12 per sheet. SPI is in most major cities. Based upon what you were quoted I would look no further.

Are single two inchers good enough or should they be put together to make 4 in panels? Also, what is the difference between 703 and 705? Is the more dense one better for bass traps for corners? how much of a gap should be between the panel and the wall for optimal absorbing?

2" is fine for the first reflection points but for greater effectiveness at lower frequencies I would atleast double up for the corner bass traps.Straddling across the corners would be your best bet.Straddling the panels across the corners would be your best bet.
