I am looking a getting a PC sound card and a DAC that both have BNC connectivity. I know that BNC is 75ohm for digital audio, but I once heard that it is the only true 75ohm connection for digital audio in the home. Is this true? Has anyone used a BNC connection before, and if so, did it sound any different than just digital coax or optical?

BNC's are the most common 75 ohm connector used for digital transmission and are considered the best for the purpose. In rare cases 75 ohm RCA's can be found(Canare makes some).Though not used for digtal audio F type connectors(cable tv) are 75 ohm aswell.(some BNC's like those used on test equipment are actually 50 ohm).Keeping the cable and terminations true 75 ohm's is benificial as it reduces reflections in the cable which should result in lower jitter.

Thanks Fred. Do you have any recommendations for BNC cables? Since it will be an audio cable, I'm sure not just any will do. :p

I had a custom BNC/RCA cable made by Blue Jeans cable to connect between my Wadia and basic Benchmark DAC1 (it doesn't have RCA connections). Anyways, it seems to work great for a hybrid. They can make you a BNC-BNC any length you want.

I like and use Canare's LV61S. http://www.canare.com/ProductItemDisplay.aspx?productItemID=75 You can make your own with a pair of these. http://www.canare.com/ProductItemDisplay.aspx?productItemID=30
Sure it's not exotic but very hard to beat for price -performance ratio.

Blue Jeans is just down the street from me, so maybe I'll stop by. Do you guys think that going BNC would have a big advantage over the other digital connection means, AES/EBU included?

    Thats convenient.

The balanced AES is good but you don't see it much anymore on consumer products.I prefer coax to optical and yes I think 75 ohm cable with BNC's at each end is ideal. As for the sonic differences (or lack of )between BNC and regular RCA termniations, that will be dependant on a number of things.eg.Like the jitter level output from the transport and the input reciever of the DAC's ability to reject it,the resolution of the system, hearing acuity etc.:)

Ya, I just emailed BJC so we'll see what they recommend for the conductor. I think I like that Canare cable and they carry it.
