My limited experience with SACD had me raise this question: Is Tommy as good or close to DSOTM? Just looking for feedback on SQ, and the appeal of the way the tracks were mixed?
Thanks

Are you talking for 2-channel, or for surround?

Nope. That said, you should still buy it.

You know what? I've had Tommy on SACD for a while now and I have yet to give it a listen. DOH! Thanks for the reminder. That said, DSOTM is one fantastic recording, especially with a great system.

I agree on both counts. Guitar players should not be allowed to play with mixing boards. (see also: Jimmy Page):D

I'm sure I'm comparing apples to oranges, so I guess I should've just asked:
    Is it worth it?:o

I know this thread is a few months old but I just picked up Tommy on SACD and it is pretty incredible. I haven't listened to the album (LP) in quite some time and I am sitting hear completely enjoying as I type.

Pete Townshend did seem to emphasize the vocals and guitars a little more over the original mix, sometimes maybe too much. It could be LP vs SACD.?. The original masters were recorded at a less than state of the art studio even in it's day and you can hear some of the artifacts (The band was struggling financially at the time). This is mainly present in the percussions that seem less defined and seem to distort like they are over driving the mic/amp but it draws you back to the age when it was originally recorded. This distortion may be why the guitars and vocals would be emphasized more.

I also have DSOTM but I'd rather not compare. I enjoy both for different reasons and moods. Technically, I'd say DSOTM is a better recording mainly because it likely had better master recordings.

If you are a Who fan, I highly recommend Tommy on SACD. The included demos and out-takes are a nice addition. It is (was) available on DVD-Audio and includes a Pete Townshend interview video.
