Just wanted to introduce myself to the Club. I wanted to put together some vintage stereo gear for my sons in their 20's and ran across some Monitor 10's. I liked them so much that I gave my $2000. Tesla speakers to my one son and kept the Monitor 10's. Since then, I've upgraded the capacitors and bought the 7's, 5jr's and 4's. I'm hooked !!! Bigtime.
Today we compare the 7's with my neighbor's Klipsch Heresy III side by side. No contest with the 7's. So here I am and glad to be a Polk fan.

Thanks for the warm greetings. I'll post some pics later on. Don't have any handy. I've built my system around the Marantz 8b which I bought for $300. 35 yrs ago. It's matched up with a Audio Research SP-9, A Rega turntable and Denon DCD 2700 cd Player. I've been in awe of the Monitor 10's. I drove 400 miles from Santa Monica to Vallejo N of San Fran to get them for the tidy sum of $125. They're beautiful, mint cherry finish. I feel so lucky !

That's quite a trip! I live in LA and although vintage Polks are rather scarce around here, they do pop up from time to time. This is a great hobby as you know, Polks make it better.:D

Yes, the monitoers do appear on LA's Craigslist now and then. That's how I got my pair of 7's for $25. w.stands. So few people listen to music these days. It's all iPods. Kinda like fast food..... junk. This guy selling the 7's had no idea ! The 7's I bought for 1 son were from Laguna. The guys wife said they had to go....didn't fit in with the decor. Strange to me.

Then I'm confused ! These are real wood veneer M10's. They're not oak or walnut. I thought they were a cherry wood. Possible that it's rosewood but definitely not vinyl. They're really early Monitor10's.

Polk never used cherry, but it's possible someone reveneered them. Can you post a clear picture?

I've got years of experience in hardwoods and that would be the lightest color walnut I've ever seen.
Sorry about the problem with the pics. My computer picks em up just fine when I enlarge off the thumbnails.

    cherry is little more redish/orange

Natural cherry is light brown with a pink cast. Left alone to age, it darkens and turns into the reddish/orange you mention.

Natural walnut is a chocolate brown with a very slight yellow cast. Left alone to age, it becomes lighter and more of the yellow comes out.

Walnut can be easily lightened by a number of methods, including Clorox bleach, to achieve the look of aged walnut.

What I'm looking for in these pictures is the grain pattern and that is definitely walnut. Cherry has a very different grain pattern.

Definitely walnut. F1 has years in it too. Walnut lightens from sunlight over the years from that familiar dark umber to an almost blond color. Check some antiques and you'll see.

I remember Paxtons, back when they were a going concern, used to steam walnut lumber that had alot of sapwood, and it would darken the whole thing to the same color as the heartwood. The grain was fine, sapwood was just too light for them to sell like that. They may have used walnut chips or sawdust in the mix to get that, since it's a natural dye.
