    LOL @ Pink Floyd reference.

This place seemed to have turned into all those places I've avoided on the internet.

Glad I missed most of it.

I took my son to an expo on trucks and earth movers (he's 2.5 years old; it was like heaven for the kid, all the buttons and sirens and what-not.

Then spent two days swimming on a lake. It was definitely a good weekend.

It was a grand weekend in a sense. Saturday I paid off my school loans and my last credit card. I'm dead broke with only a couple hundred bucks to last me through to August 30th when I get paid again but I'm debt free. 100% free and clear.

    It's a good feeling.

I also got a new lawnmower. Well, it's used but new it's about $2200 and I paid $700. It's just over 3 years old according to manufacture date but it's in great condition if not missing a few pieces like the mulching plate and a broken headlight. But I'm not going to complain especially since the guy I got it from just had it serviced with new belts, battery, spark plugs, filters and an oil change. Made mince-meat of the lawn. What use to take 2.5 hours took 25 minutes. With two lawns to mow, it will take me 6 to 8 hours on a Saturday and kills my entire weekend. With this mower, I can do both lawns starting at 10 am and be sitting on the couch drinking a beer by Noon.

I envy you. My wife and I have years before the Student Loans go away. But we're plugging away for a debt free future ourselves. As someone with more understanding of college debt than most, congrats... Seriously. If I knew you, I'd buy you more beer.

I plugged away at it and put myself out a few times in the past year to get headway. Getting the big D last year was a blessing in disguise. It ruined me financially so I had to move back home to avoid bankruptcy. With few living expenses, I was able to throw most of my paycheck at it.

Big D's are no fun, but I was also able to go debt-free after my last one. Looking back now, it was a blessing. Lots of good things happened in my life that otherwise would not have, getting debt-free was just one of them. :)

You know why divorce is so expensive? BECAUSE ITS WORTH IT! No wives = no debt. :)

My wife is not as much a spender as I am, and we've settled on only paying cash for everything unless we absolutely have to have it and can't make the scratch... Like cab fare if our car suddenly bursts into flames and takes our wallets with it...

Divorce... Ugh... I've been married 9 years this week. We've had some serious issues only a few times. I'm blessed, I know. My wife is first and foremost my friend. We sometimes disagree about money (when I am eyeing a new sub or a receiver or...), but I'm never without what I honestly think I deserve and she's never without that luxury either.

99.9% of our debt was accumulated while in school. Divorce, should I ever feel the need for one, wouldn't erase it.

Divorce didn't erase my debt. In fact, I swallowed more than my fair share and gave up more than my fair share just to get out of it. She even tried to take my truck but thankfully the great state of NJ said "No, that's a premarital asset but since you bought your Camry before you filed, he's entitled to half of that."

Divorce ruined me. I can't say it more plain than that. What got me out of debt was my parents being gracious enough to see the predicament I was in and having mercy on me and letting me stay, rent free, until I got my life together again. I started paying off debt and fighting with credit companies. I got sent to collections on everything she owed under the settlement so even what she was responsible for, she still got off on so I could save my butt. I was tired of getting passed over for promotions and getting screwed every which way from Sunday by my rather jerkish manager so I found a new job, cashed in 3 months of vacation and used my signing bonus to make a massive dent in my debt. Then I went to my friend who does taxes and she found me a favorable return and that paid off even more. I've been living like a pauper for the past year to pay off the rest and I'm finally done.

The new girl, she's cheaper than me! To a fault almost. If I take her out somewhere nice, she freaks out about the prices. She shops at thrift stores to save a buck and I've watched her look at something she really wants say "I don't really need this right now." and put it back on the shelf. I asked her if she was really a girl 'cause I couldn't believe a girl would do such a thing. Depending on what it was, I'd actually go back and get it for her just to reward her for such positive behavior. It's sad that the proper behavior in such a situation is so rare anymore that it's the exception and not the norm and I feel I have to reward it to positively enforce it.

But she was raised in England and that apparently has alot to do with her values and I am eternally thankful to her father for raising her so well. She is the polar opposite of every other girl I have ever been with.

My previous post wasn't in response to you; it was to the "no wife = no debt" comment. I know the stats of financial issues to divorce rate. I know the emotional attachment that money has. I've been exploring and coming to terms in the past few years, to my own sense of entitlement. I don't need most of what I want and half of what I have. That realization has saved me so much money over the past 2 months. My wife sounds a lot like your new girl; thrift stores aren't a bad place to find a few things; nicer things = consignment shops. And for our son, he dresses very well.... Yard sales generally hold some stylish, quality toddler clothes.

I have to admit, though, I'm pretty stoked when I hear about people that can arrive at 'debt free'. It's an inspiration and the closest thing you can be to "rich" anymore.

I said it once, I'll say it again: Congrats, man.

Congrats John I'm happy for you. Being debt free is a wonderful thing.

However, I have so many GFs that were left saddled with enormous debt thanks to thier ex's that it is not even funny. Oh yeah they also got saddled with the kids minus child support.

So needless to say it works both ways. It's just as hard to find a man who has his head on straight & knows how to put the most important priorities first.

I see prime examples of this attitude from men on this board. They spend right & left on new toys then will come and complain thier wives are *itching at them! Well what do you expect?

It all comes down to maturity, and self control. And very few people have it.

Congrats again, enjoy you new found financial freedom.

That sounds fantastic. Right now, I'd settle for floating on the river with a couple of cold ones. Been a long, hard summer and man am I tired.

Jstas, congrats man. I agree with everpress. I'd buy you a beer, too.
