Another vintage find on Craigslist

Just when I thought I had found all the vintage Polks in New Mexico, another pair pops up. Monitor 10A pair this time, old style Peerless tweeters, black with the leads angling down. Of all the vintage Polks that I have bought in the last several months, these have the sweetest highs. I tested it with Heifetz playing solo Bach violin sonatas. Lesser tweeters set off my tinnitus. These don't.

Someone really needs to stop me from buying more of these. I am beginning to become like one of those crazy cat ladies, hoarding Polks instead of kitties.

Or maybe one of the Collyer brothers.

Very nice! The Peerless tweets are sweet sounding. I love the highs from my Peerless M7A's. Very laid back, sweet and musical sounding. I've got a pair of SDA 2A's with RD0-194's as well...the 2A's sound better as a whole, but the Peerless tweeters sound better than the 194's IMO.

I haven't heard of these before. If their anything similar to the Yamaha NS-10 studio speakers, then they should be good.

What do you mean the leads were pointed down. Are you talking about the tweeters? Can you provide a picture for us dim witted polkies.

Correct me if I am wrong Jim, but you are refering to the tweeter itself being all black with the lead(sodering) angled downwards. The later model with the SL2000 goes directly from side to side. So he is decribing the true all Black original SL1000 tweeter with the those Monitor 10a's.

    Nice speakers

That's right, Hamatym. They also say 10A-116811 and 10A-116815 on the back. I have been listening to them for the last two days and really like them. I am about to start rebuilding the crossovers on a pair of 10Bs with RDO-194 tweeters so I will get to do a real comparison soon.

Jimbo, did you get the 10b's done for the comparison yet? I now have later 10B's with RDO194's and think they sound great....just curious how they compare to the 10A's?

    Hi Hamatym.

No I haven't done any more rebuilding since that post. But in the meantime realized that I really liked another earlier pair of Monitor 10Bs made in 1983. These had the SL1000 tweeter and, in spite of their reputation, sounded quite smooth to me. Still, I replaced them with the RDO-194s which sound a bit better. These are now my current favorites. Still, I have the itch to give the 7As, 10As and newer 10Bs another chance.
