    get trojanremover... malwarebytes didnt find anything either.
    It's a rootkit.

    thanks. I'll remember that for next time (hopefully won't be one). I've gone nuclear and re-installing the OS.

    Careful, hope it didn't sneak onto your other pc. Once you realize it, it'll be too late.

    Once you have done that, download the LiveCD's for UBCDWin and Ubuntu and burn them into bootabled CD's (see my earlier post). Next time something goes wrong, you have bootable CD's that you can use to fix your system instead of reinstalling.

    Also, now that you are reinstalling, do the following:

    1) When Windows asks you to create a new user, create it as 'admin' with Administrator rights
    2) Create a new user as your regular user account with restricter user rights
    3) Password protect both

    Do not login as admin unless you have to. This will give you some security improvements over the default installation.

    May as well go Windows 7 since you're formatting. I'm going to format one of my externals and load it on there or either partition my 500gb internal drive. Heard great things about 7.
