I have been looking for a good pair of stereo speakers. I have an old pioneer stereo receiver with 100 watts per channel. I listen to almost every genre of music and was hoping for a reccomendation for a pair of speakers to accompany the receiver. I have a budget of $500.

    Welcome to Club Polk Jdogg!
You will have to be a bit more specific regarding the type of speakers you want, but I think you'll find plenty of good recommendations here on the forum. Also, when it comes to audio the best bang for the buck has always been getting something used, and I bet you'd be able to find a good pair on here that'll suit your needs. Enjoy your stay! :D

I'd say get these but I doubt your Pioneer can drive a 4 ohm load:

Otherwise look at the Monitor 70 series at newegg. These are vague recommendations.

RTI A3's then. If you can drive 4 ohms get the LSi7's from Fry's for 500.

Jdogg, the above mentioned recommendations are all fine picks but another question to ask is....are you willing to buy an amp/receiver upgrade/etc? Speakers are more prone to damage by being underpowered as opposed to being overpowered. Just something to keep in mind ;)

Thank you. One less child support payment I have to make.

But Hey! A lot of speakers, book or floor, can be had for $500 and under.
Looking for new? Gently cared for? Music with color? Flat as a fritter?
Try out a few sets and let your ears decide. I can spend your money easily. :D

Not bad...Floor spikes can be had on the cheap, so don't let the lack of them deter you. Just make sure they ARE working first and foremost.

http://hsuresearch.com/products/hb-1.html (I own these and think they are very nice - balanced and full sounding even without sub)

You probably have a lot of good options for bookshelf speakers at that price point, and even can get some decent floor standers too.

You can also check out http://www.audiogon.com for used speakers to get even more bang for your buck.

Have you considered looking for a nice pair of Klipsh Heresey's? They team well with a receiver.01_klipsch_front.jpg

Why? They are relatively small and efficient little speakers that pack a punch when needed. With a receiver, they are a great introduction to audio and work well with most all types of music.

Used is he way to go.....

Lots of good floorstanders out there for under $500 on the used market....

One big thing that would help - what speakers have you listened to (regardless of price) that you liked the sound of? The choices are really to vast without getting something from you to narrow down the search. If you have not gone out and listened to some yet - Get out and get your listen on...... Report back what you liked and what you didn't from various speakers and we will give you suggestions of what you may like.....

    Michael
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)
