I am wondering what you tube aficionados think about the Magnum 66?

Is it a good pre to roll tubes? Anyone tried it before?

DKG999 has one so hopefully he'll chime in. I've heard his on a couple occasions and was very impressed. If I decide to go with more than an entry level tube pre like I have now (Dared Sl2000A) this would be on my list as it's fairly priced and they come up FS quite often.

So far I am very impressed with the Dared so it may be a while before I need a higher end tube pre.

Have had a 66 Magnum for quite some time...good entry level pre that fits the bill for me.

They come in two models, with a remote and no phono section...or with phono section and no remote.

Takes the 12AU7,there are a world of tubes to choose from.

Good used can usually be had for 550.-700.

I love my Rogue Magnum 66! It's a great pre, and responds well to both a good power cable and tube rolling. You'll want to get some good tube dampeners (I use Herbies) as that also helped. I've found that Sylvania Triple Mica Blackplates work really good with this pre. RCA Command and CBS Hytron are also good tubes for this pre. I just got some RCA cleartops that I have yet to try.

I did replace the Rogue in my main system with an ARC SP16L pre. The ARC has everything I like about the Rogue, and just takes it all to a little higher level, with a wider and deeper soundstage. That's an opinion solely based on the integration in my current system.

Thanks dkg999 for a nice review on the Rogue 66. I think I'll just start off with it and move up the ladder at a later time. :)

Quite frankly, you might not have to move up the ladder. It's that good.

Thanks Mike for chiming in. I am getting the one without remote and with Phono.

I found one on Agon for $515 shipped so I pulled the trigger. It's silver and the seller said 9/10 so I hope it's worth it.

Yeppie! I hope I am already at the top of the ladder with Magnum 66.

Any recommendations on what Tubes to try for Tube Magic on the 66?

That's a very good price for a 66 Magnum...I've owned that model previous to the one I have now;LSR

I can't remember which tube the phono section accepted, but the linestage takes 12AU7's.

Most will tell you to stay with NOS tubes only..."if" you can afford them, always been my downfall :D

I've had good luck with re-issue tubes such as Amperex,Electro-Harmonix,Mullard,etc.

Have fun with your new pre. It will take your rig to new heights.
