Newbee here so be gentle ( i'm from the UK )
I just bought my first Polk a second hand sub. After doing so i thought i'd look up Polk on the wonder web and i'm impressed with what i've bought. I was at a car boot sale and saw it for £5.00 :eek: i'd heard of polk but didnt know much about them so i thought i'd give it a go, cant go wrong for £5.00.( about $7.00 to you guys ) the cabinet is a bit bashed but thats easily sorted i'm on with building one now. i'll post pics when finished.
Any how works fine sounds great. bargain of the century i'm a Polk convert.
I've been looking through your setups and there are some amazing systems out there, i just wish we had bigger houses in the UK to get some serious kit into. All in one HT's are popular in the UK but i'm in the process of setting up a seperate system, hence the sub purchase.
anyhow enough drivel from me i just wanted to say Hi from the UK.

    Welcome to Club Polk!! I have been to the UK a few times myself and can confirm the small houses, lol. I am in the AF and have been to RAF Mildenhall more times than I can count. Went to London once, Cambridge, and another town outside RAF Mildenhall that I can't remember off the top of my head. Polk is an excellent choice for HT and I'm not just saying that because I own some Polk's, lol. Stick around long enough and we'll drain your wallet, whether its USD or British Pounds, it's all the same to us. :D Any idea on the model number of the sub you picked up? Would be nice to know just how good you did. Again, welcome and glad to have you.

    Thanks Guys, it's the RM6000 8" sub.
    Is this the point where you all say oh no what have you wasted your money on ?????
    As i said it sounds good to a non audiophile and for £5.00 i thought i cant go wrong. I have no idea how much it should have been new, many years ago i presume, but i'm sure its a bargain. Im of the opinion buy a cheap range from an expensive manufacturer rather than an expensive range from a cheap manufacturer.

    As long as you are happy with it's performance, who are we to tell you it was a bad idea, lol. Looks like the sub you have is part of the RM6000 HTIB (Home Theater In a Box) and retailed for around $550 for the 5.1 setup. I think it is still available for purchase today, so for 7 Pounds I think that sub was a pretty good deal for you.

    I'm setting this up on a budget ( either that or get rid of the wife and i've grown quite attached to her over the years ) so is this the place to ask you advice on a receiver i've narrowed it down to 3 any info/advice would be great.
    Onkyo TXSR307
    Harmon Kardon AVR155
    Sony STRDG820

    I 'm steering towards the HK but the Sony has alot going for it in terms of spec. ie 7.1, HDMI audio etc compared to the others. :confused:

    As far as AVR's go, it all depends on your budget and what you really want it to do. Do you want HDMI and the newer codecs for Blu-Ray, or will just a plain old AVR do? What are you planning on using for your speakers? If they are something that can be driven with a decent amount of power you may want to look into one with pre-outs for adding an external amp down the road. I know the Onkyo doesn't have HDMI or pre-outs, and I wasn't able to find any information on the HK. The Sony has HDMI, but again no pre-outs. The Sony will also decode the newer codecs used in Blu-Rays. I have an Onkyo myself and enjoy it very much. The 806 is probably a bit out of your price range at around $600 US. Alot of other guys here are more familiar with HK's and such and maybe even a Pioneer might suit yours needs. Again, most important is budget and what you want it to do for us to make a better recommendation.

    If I might ask , what is a car boot sale ??? Is that just another way of saying carport sale / garage sale ??

    Good find on the sub, great price but you will want to upgrade down the road.

    Right the system is as follows :
    Panasonic th42px70 plasma (1080p)
    Sky HD box connected via HDMI/Optical
    PS3 connected via HDMI/Optical
    Sony DVD connected via component/either optical or digital coax
    Wii connected via component/phono
    PS2 connected via component/optical if enough inputs or phono
    Center speaker Kef KHT2001
    Sub speaker Polk rm6000
    Front speakers Wharfedale diamond
    Rear speakers Eltax Monitor
    I know the speaker setup is not brilliant but we all have to start somewhere and work up.
    The Onkyo 307 does have HDMI, 3 in and 1 out with audio pass through.
    My budget is £ 200 to £250. The plan is to start with a half decent amp then upgrade the speakers in stages at a later date, the room's not huge approx 10ft x 16ft. main use for the setup if for watching movies.

    Fossy a car boot sale is usually held in a big open field where people pay about £15.00 to drive their cars on then sell any unwanted items they have. traditionally selling out of their car boot ( or trunk as you call it in the states ) hence the name car boot sale.:D

    Yeah I just noticed the 307 was HDMI capable. It just doesn't support the newer codecs, and still lacks pre-outs. All in all though it's not a bad unit and like I said I have an Onkyo and love it. Thanks for the lesson on the whole car boot sale thing, learn something every day, lol.

    Our schedules are pretty close, I work Mid shift over here (11:30 PM- 7:30 AM) I think that's why I always start the B-Day threads, cause I am the only one on, lol. :D

    Welcome!

    I started on my Polk journey with that same sub which was included in the RM6500 5.1 system. I have since sold that setup and picked up some SDA-1C's and Monitor 5's that I enjoy 2 channel stuff on.

    LOL, it's kind of a running joke here that Russ (lightman1) is a creepy stalker that hides in the bushes in your front yard. That reminds me I have to leave some water out so he doesn't dehydrate again, lol. :D Don't worry, he is harmless, one of the better guys here at Club Polk.

    Something as simple as a little ocean isn't going to stop Russ. He's probably out in your bushes right now...don't bother looking though, you won't be able to see him. He's a very sneaky person. Don't worry...he's harmless.

    You have good reasons to be worried... CP isn't virtually safe, you never know when the dark side can attack and must be ready at all times :eek:. I guess you don't like your dog :confused:
