Hmmm... what to do...

My receiver is on it's 2nd to last day under warranty. It has been randomly going into protect mode, even though I am only using it as a pre-amp. I have already had this unit serviced twice.
It was shutting off very frequently yesterday, so I decided to call in today and set up a repair. Today, I have been running this unit for a few hours at decently loud levels, but the unit won't go into protect mode. I am still going to send it in, but what happens when it arrives at the service center and the problem doesn't occur while it is there?
Marantz already said that we can work something out in the future if the problem persists, so I am not worried about it on that end. I just want to know ya'lls experiences with components that needed repairs, but the problem magically went away while it was at the service centers.
Thanks!

if it keeps going into protect mode.. check to see if some of your speaker wires aren't touching each other.. or the frame of the receiver.. this is a very common problem. and will most always cause a receiver to go into protect mode.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Thank you for the timely response. I am only running the front three speakers, and none of the wires are touching each other.
The SR6001 units are widely known to suffer from this problem, and I have already had the heat sink replaced and resolder the amp back into place.TV: LG 55LW5600

Well.... in this case, still send it in and maybe they'll come up with something else on it they can fix even if they can't get it to duplicate the issue.
When it comes back, and it's still doing it, raise a stink about how they didn't fix it, and that they screwed you as a consumer because now the unit is out of warranty, and still malfunctioning because they weren't competent enough to do their job and blah blah blah. You'll get it fixed.
That's the cynical approach. With a unit that's already been serviced TWICE, i wouldn't hesitate to do that.
But i'd wait and see what happens. Send it in.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Well Marantz will either send me a newer model or extend the warranty if the problem were to come back in the future.

No problem. I am still going to send it in regardless, Marantz support said to. Something in the back of my mind is hoping it comes back and falls apart in the next month =DTV: LG 55LW5600

Usually if they can't duplicate the problem, they WON'T extend the warranty. The warranty extension (90 days on Samsung, for example) doesn't apply if they find nothing actually wrong with it.
YMMV though. Not all customer service centers are created equal. If Marantz has a good track record of CS, you may be able to argue with them if it gets sent out, nothing appears to be wrong, you get it back, and it starts doing the same stuff right outside of warranty. -

Can't say what protocol Marantz has, but speaking on my repair experience, it is very hard to fix something when it is an intermittent problem. You try your best to duplicate the problem, but you do have other customers to take care of. If after a legitimate amount of time and effort has been spent trying, some places will just return it as: "CNV" (Can Not Verify). Others will try to cover the most likely causes from past experience.
From one of your other posts "I have already had the heat sink replaced and resolder the amp back into place." Hopefully they will know this was already done and go on to the next likely cause.
Give them as much info as you can, using as a pre.... only running front 3 xx ohm speakers.....always happens on Monday......never happens when watching DVD AAAA but happens a lot when watching DVD BBBB. You get the idea.
A couple other thoughts, do you have 3 more speakers at your disposal? Maybe you have a speaker that is shorting out somewhere. Have you tried to remove something from the chain? Remove the amp and use the AVRs amp, try a different DVD player.
Good luck -
Thank you for the response. I faxed over all the other service reports to the new place. I also included what components are hooked up and the current settings used for the receiver. I told them I am only using the receiver as a pre-amp as well. The ventilated area is about 10" or so on top and 5" on one side and totally clear on the other.
I have swapped out receivers and my LSi's worked just fine. The unit has gone into protect at various volume levels and when watching tv, movies, and listening to cds and computer.
However, my gut instinct tells me they won't be able to duplicate the problem and send it back. The specific service center didn't give me the best impression =[ . Anyway, after speaking with the reps from Marantz, I am fairly optimistic in their continued customer support after the warranty expires. When I told them I am concerned in the product's integrity after the warranty expires, the rep told me "We will work something out to keep you happy." That gives me peace of mind.TV: LG 55LW5600

If you have any wires that may be touching the chassis or each other this is pretty common."They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
