SDA 1C Pics

Here are the pics of my "new to me" SDA's. Thought I'd start over with another thread since the other one was pretty full. Besides, pics are where it's at as no-one wants to go through all those posts just to see a few pics!!

I know it isn't exactly the way they are supposed to be set-up but it's the best I can do for now. They are 3' 7" apart and the left channel only has 2'8" of space between it and the equipment rack. My wife wanted to put a bigger lamp with shelves on it back into that small spot by the rack but told her no way, that has to be open now! She's a peach as she's dealing with her living room and trying to figure some new things out. It does get her one step closer to "seeing the light" for building my own sound room. Told her that if I could get that done she could do whatever she wanted to the living room and I could care less...

Anyway, as per the spacing of the SDA's even though it's not "ideal" it still sounds awesome!

Sorry about the darkness of the one pic, my camera is having issues.

    Beautiful
I bet if the cabinet was not in between like that you'd have a much better sound stage. I do understand thats what you have to work with for now. Just think what you have to look forward to in the future. I have a similar set-up but have a little more room around my SRSII's.

Moving them forward (so they're 1-2" in front of the cabinet) would do the same. Make sure the drivers behind the covers is an inch in front of the cabinet.

    Thanks for the kind words!

I will try that the next time I do some critical listening. I could get away with that by myself a little but to leave it that way all the time I'd be asking for trouble!

Thats partially true but an empty space is far better.

True, but short of truly critical listening, the difference is barely anything. To me, having a cabinet/stand/rack between speakers is both natural and functional. Moving the speakers 2-3" forward isn't an issue (so long as the cabinet doors don't extrude when listening: meaning they go up or in and not out into the path of any drivers). But you are correct. Empty spaces do make the best listening conditions for most high-end speakers, especially SDA's which rely upon good positioning. I'd be less worried about a pair of floorstanding SDAs then I would be about a pair of CRS/+'s. The CRS line relies upon the rear-mounted passive bass radiator. That bass-rad needs to bounce most of the lower-end bass off a rear wall. On those, the minimum distance from wall is 4" if memory serves, versus nothing on other SDA's. That makes positioning CRS's doubly important. But for the sake of full-sized SDA's, the difference is much less. Just having them parallel and positioned far enough away from each other and sidewalls is enough.

I don't want to get into a pissing contest here but :) it makes a big difference from what I personally found. Maybe I'll post pictures later but my entertainment center is large and similar to the OP's but a little larger. When I moved it out I was very surprised how much better the sound stage was. Unfortunately it has to stay for a while longer but I am actively look at options for a replacement.
If we got in a pissing contest I'd win right now. I've had many Budweisers and a full bladder :p

John - I purchased them from the original owner with the boxes, paperwork, etc... He even kept them in the same room all these years! Not Ebay, Craigslist.

Thanks again for the nice comments. When I post pics like this I try not to be proud, just proud to own! And what fun they are!

I have found in my short journey with SDA's that room placement is the key to making the sound really shine. In my H/T I have the SDA-2B's like 2.5" out from the wall to get a huge bass response! In my 2-channel rig I now have the SDA-1C's out 24" from the rear wall and the imaging and details are magical!:D

I've got just about the same issue with my 1C setup, but there's not much I can do about it. As you said, even though the spacing is not ideal, they are indeed awesome.

    Enjoy!!

Nice looking 1Cs. I've got the same issue going right now though. It's tough to get these things set up 'ideally' and still keep the wife happy.

Friends don't let friends' wives mess with the setup.

I'll set up the TLs in the kitchen if I want to.

Future plans are for SDA CRS in the bathroom  lol j/k

Beautiful 1C's, same pair I've got (studio) and they totally match the rest of my decor. Now all you need to do is dynamat those driver baskets and apply mortite caulk cord in place of the stock gaskets on the drivers+rear speaker terminal.

Oh last but not least.....TUBES! :D
