Now that's an interesting read:
It offers a good analysis and explanation for some of the loss of dynamic-range with nowadays recordings.
Don't forget to checkout the loudest-artists and quietest-artists lists ..

I noticed that Enya, Norah Jones, and Brian Eno are all on the "quietest" list. Something about their albums sound magical - different from the loudness present in your average pop/rap album.

Without dynamics its really not music at all and there is no need for Hi-Fi equipment. This is one reason I like horns so much. The dynamics are amplified beyond that of normal low efficiency loudspeakers.
    Vinyl, the final frontier...

Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... :D

Thanks Carpenter, that was a great read. Think of all young kids that might never know what real music used to sound like. I am encouraged by the efforts of some groups and artists to try and reverse the trend. Just wondering if the newer IPod generation will ever think of music as anything more than "background" stuff.
