Monitor 40 vs Monitor 50 for surrounds
Hello all. I am finishing up a 5.1 system (thanks to so many of you on the forum), but had a question on my surrounds. I was set on the Monitor 40s before, but then got to thinking. Getting a stand (24") plus the cost of the Mon40 speakers, it is only $40 less than a pair of the Monitor 50s right now (both blacks, I know the Cherry's were even cheaper at Newegg two days ago). So I'm wondering, for the surrounds, is there a difference between the Mon40s and Mon50s that it would be worth paying just the extra $40? I use my system probably 60% HT/40% music. I have room for either (especially since the stand's base is larger than the Mon50s anyway). I have Mon60s in front, a CS2 on the way for center, and a SVS PC12 on the way for the sub.
I will only be using my sub during the day, after about 9PM I will turn it off since I live in an apartment (don't want to tick off the neighbors), so wasn't sure if that would make a difference.

It's up to you really. I always thought floorstanding surrounds was inherently bad ****. Both will sound relatively similar, and for surround duty, either will perform admirably. I'd say go with what ever tickles your fancy. I like the idea of floor standing rears because they're less likely to get knocked over (something I'm paranoid with my RTi6s over).

Thanks John. I really wish I would have went with the Mon50s. I had ordered the Mon40s, but now have to get the stand, and ofcourse the Mon50s go down in price. But they're out of stock until September anyway. I was going to try and sell the Monitor 40s and stand, but looks like I'll have to wait. I am paranoid to off knocking over the speakers off the stands.:( Hopefully you're right and the Mon 40s won't be too different in sound for surrounds. -
I use the 40's as my surrounds and believe me, you won't be dissapointed. They work very well in my setup, and will work well for you too. Glad to see you got your system up and running, you can always go with Plan B later once the 50's come back in stock.
