AV RECEIVER to SUB L/R

I am currently connecting my sub PSW300 via the Left/Right output of AV receiver to the left/right input of the sub.
I just purchased a new Sony DN1000 AV receiver which has 1 sub output.
Do I use a Y-cable To connect the sub. And if so why did I need a L/R before.
Thank you,

You may be in a tight spot.
The PSW300 is a speaker level and line level input sub only.
It does not have the newer single RCA input called "LFE" which is what you would use to your Sony DN1000 subwoofer output.
I looked for the specs on the Sony and for rear view pictures and it does not have any pre-out connections for Front L/R, only speaker level wire terminals and the single RCA sub output.
You may have to wire up your sub the "Polk Way" by running speaker wires from your Sony L/R outputs to the sub, then wires from the sub to your speakers....or....upgrade your sub to one that has the single LFE input.
Others may have some better hints....

Won't the PSW300 still put out sound if only one of those L/R inputs is used? Bass doesn't really have much of a L/R channel anyways.
I thought i remembered reading on here that you can just use one of the two inputs.
I could be wrong.... i can't find that thread right now.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

That might work. The xover knob on the PSW300 would have to be set all the way up clockwise - otherwise won't the AVR and the sub xover be conflicting/combining?

Just set the PSW300 to the highest frequency possible, and use the AVR to set the crossover. Of course, depends on what other speakers you have going. Personally, i like a little overlap to help with smoothing it out.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Hey rollgrinder, using a y-cable is the most utilized method for those running a subwoofer that does NOT have a dedicated LFE input.
Your older receiver didn't have an LFE output so you used the preamp outputs to connect it to your subwoofer, leaving you to fine-tune the crossover points on the sub itself.
Now that you have an LFE output, you can either use the Sony's cut off frequency option OR the subwoofers cut off frequency. In order to do this have one set all the way up, and use the other to dial down to where you want it. Keep in mind though this might affect what frequencies your front speakers might receive as well if you use the receiver method.
As far as having to use both L and R on your older receiver, that might not have been necessary. In my experience with many subwoofers beforehand, some worked by simply using the L input on my subwoofer, while other subwoofers required both L/R to give me my bass (this is regarding subwoofers that did NOT have a dedicated LFE input). Hope this helped!Truck setup
