Reciever Question

I'm looking for a new reciever, My current yamaha htr 6130 was a theater in a box thing at best buy I got last year. 100 watt per channel hdmi switching neutered version only does video.

I'm looking for a reciever that has the new hdmi fuctions and blueray audio decoders. Also I'd like it to have a more complex crossover fuctions for the speakers and crossover. My current reciever If I crossover my speakers to 60hz where I like them my sub doesn't seem to go over it for the lfe effects. Example in the 5th element at the beginning the space ship bass rumble is gone from the sub if my crossover isn't set high on the reciever's speaker controls. Which to me makes the speakers sound lacking.

I realize buying a better subwoofer would be an option to blend better with my speakers to use a higher crossover. I'm not sure if theres a reciever out there that could do what i want it to though. I've heard of bass cancelation so maybe its a bad idea to have bass overlapping. But a new sub is last on my list, I need rti a7's to finish my speakers and I want the new reciever, so the subwoofer would be a ways down the road

As far as bass canceling..do you have the phase switch set in the proper position? When it comes to blending your speakers with your subwoofer, ideally you want somewhat of an overlap but not too high otherwise your subwoofer might distort trying to reproduce higher bass frequencies along with the lower bass frequencies (at the same time) at a 'moderate' volume or higher. For that I had 2 subwoofers running and it worked wonderfully, actually it was 4 but I dont count my built in subs in my towers.

Edit: The first was a Polk PSW10 which I had cut off at 80hz, the second being a Velodyne CHT-12 at 40hz.

Amazon has the Pioneer SC-05 for $1,050 and the SC-07 for $1,070.

I haven't heard the pioneers; at american they don't have them set up and at best buy they dont have my rti a speakers. I've read they have a different sound. I really like the music enhancer on the yamaha. Makes music from my zune sound really good. I've always liked rock eq settings, so I guess I like high and low colored music. From the people that have the pioneers does it allow for that and also does it have a crossover setting to overlap the sub frequency with the speaker crossover settings.

Also, I have been looking at subwoofers and I'm leaning towards the dsw pro 600. The room is 18x12' and I'd like to have all polk speakers and they have good reviews and get down to 25hz. I know u guys will probably suggest svs or hsu. Are they really that superior and if so why doesn't polk step up?

    Thanks for your help guys.

I was actually going to mention those, but I knew someone else would. For around what youre looking to spend its been said countless times those are the receivers of choice. Make sure if you purchase one online you go through a reputable seller.

As far as 'overlap' frequencies/etc you can always do that yourself if need be. Unless you had a bad pair of bookshelves up front that only cover a small portion of the frequency range, you can overlap and blend as needed. It just takes a little time, also try moving your subwoofers placement around and see if you get better output before having to buy a new one.

Svs or hsu aren't the only ones mentioned on here, you should check out Sunfire or even Epiksubwoofers.com :D

do you want to stay with new equipment or would a used piece work, so long as it looks and performs as new?

I like to be the first owner of a reciever since i'd want the newer bells and whistles. Unless it was a current reciever that just needed sold again for some reason i'd consider it.

I'm considering just upgrading my 100 watt 8inch sub first, probably the weakest link right now that i've thought about it all day. Thinking about a budget of around the 600-700 for a sub should be good enough. Any clear winner in that price range? Sub placement would be more attractive in the corner to the left of my left front channel if that would help with any suggestions. I've looked at the epik vanquish and it looks pretty good. I have enough room for 16inch width in that space comfortably. Also the dsw pro 600 would fit nicely. Went to look at svs subs again but google says the site has been reported to have malware and wont let me get on the site. I think their subs are on the side of giantnormous so I don't think thats my best option.

If you check videogon or valueelectronics, I'm sure Rob will get you a better deal on the Pioneer SC-05. Definitely check those two 1st. As for sub, check out Epik Subwoofers or SVSound as Im sure they have plenty sub for you in your price range that will rock you.

Or even a used sunfire, went to hear a sunfire true sub today (used 8 incher) and omg....that thing is a BEAST. I used to contemplate the svs pb10 and polk dsw600, and I'm sure you'll find plenty of satisfied owners of these subs....but those sunfires are a thing to be heard, Tuffman used to rave alot about them, I think I'll soon be following those footsteps :D

    +1 on videogon or valueelectronics.

If you are serious about audio, then you will want a good receiver with 7.1 pre-outs to allow for external amplification. Many of us are partial to Pioneer receivers.
They tend to run cooler than the others and usually have the best features for the price.
Check out the new VSX-21THX or VSX-23THX or their predecessors the VSX-01THX or VSX-03THX.
I'm sure that you will find an excellent receiver from that selection in your price range.

For your subwoofer, I agree with Cfrizz and recommend the DSW600.
I have one and it does very well in my large living room.

+1000. You have alloted yourself a real nice budget here Mark. The SC-07 is right up your alley. This Pioneer Elite line is really exceptional, and if you can get a listen, i think you will be convinced. Havent heard the DSW600, but if Cfrizz and comp. give their stamp of approval, thats good enough for me.:D
