This is for a friend of mine, he has Modurant Short Bookshelf mains (no rears yet), and it's 90% HT use.

He has a SPAZ for dog, so I think the only design he should look at is either bandpass, or downfiring. A front firing, or anything with a grille will more than likely get fubared.

He is also doing it on the cheap, this is his first HT rig, and he doesn't take it REAL seriously, but wants to complete it. Hence the $200 budget.

I found an MTX 10" at CC for $199, looking for other options/suggestions if you guys have any. I saw a Tivoli 8" at Tweeter for $149, but I'd like him to get a LEAST a 10".

Cheers,
Russ

    All done fellas.

Ac4l, AR S112PS, botton firing 12", $149. That will take care of him to 30Hz, and stay somewhat mutt-proof.

Hey Russ, I have that sub in my living room HT and it is a really great sounding sub for the price. I have had mine now for about 4 years.

For anyone else interested in a great deal on a sub, check out the sony 120 watt 12" powered sub. I think the model number is SAWM40. Once you get the sub, add a bag of polyfill to the inside and this bad boy and it can hit pretty hard down to around 20Hz, no joke. Well worth the money!

I've heard it - it's OK, but my dual PSW350's outdid it big time. He didn't do the polyfill mod though. As for 20 Hz - not a chance; it did get into the 30's OK, but there was audible THD.

It IS a great deal for $130. Also a great deal is the recently OOP DLS 10" from PE for $99 - performed WAY out of its league and got rave reviews over at HTF.

Ironically, much of the discussion centered around a shoot-out between these very two subs.

BL - forgot to mention thanks for the pics of your sub in the other thread - what a friggin monster. Have you considered installing flared ports instead of simply holes cut in the wood? Your flow capability would go up substantially and you would experience less port noise due to a turbulent flow at the exit.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. I have bounced back an forth between moding the bottom portson theis beast. I also have a 12" version sitting in the garage. I used the 12" version to test different port depths and I found if I added 4 inch deep flaired ports it sounded solid but a little too boomy on music.

I'm not sure what to do with the 15" version that you saw in the pics. It sounds so great and I have it dialed in perfect for my taste...it also doubles as a vacuum (I have seen it suck up paper and cats toys that lurk too close) I'm at the stage where I could mod it and might sound better or worse and I'm not sure if it's worht the risk.

Port info: Top port is 6 inch diameter, 8 inches deep.
Port info: Bottom port are two 4 inch ports 3/4 inch deep.

I'm not quite sure where to begin.

    Thanks,
    -BL

Far be it from me to screw up a perfectly good sounding sub. If it sounds awesome and you modeled it with those ports, leave it alone. It just struck me as odd at first that you didn't flare the exits (or presumably the entrances either), as most DIY builders do.

My general practice in home theater is: If it ain't broke...fix it or replace it anyway!

But in this case, I think I'll leave well enough alone. Maybe later down the road after the newness wears off.

Man I have been looking at the Deware site for years wondering if that House Wrecker would be the end all subwoofer, can you give a little review? Do you know how low it goes, how loud? does it have a flat responce? does it take much power to unlease the beast? tell me more about it.

    Thanks

Gonzo, if I remember correctly, I just saw a ct120 go for $300+, get your ebay on man, and put the cash in your pocket.

    hoosier21-

Here's my impressions of the beast so far. I am powering it with two 15 inch Tempests from adire audio. I am using a 375W into 8 ohms Bash digital amp. I guess I would have to say this thing is gut wrenching. I have it tuned down to 13Hz (at -3db)...and it is about 3 feet from the corner. I built the beast to spec. and it has got to be my favorite musical sub I have ever heard. The HWK blends in perfectly with my polk mains. It only gets recognized because the thing is soo big (4 feet tall). My borther in law helped me build the cabinet. The total cost was about $750. This thing if used improperly is very capable of causing structural damage if placed in the wrong hands. It has been a great project to work on and hopefully this sumer I can finish painting it. It is very powerful and clean and easy to build. If you decide to build one and need some advice just let me know...I know some tweeks from the original design that can make this HWK realy pound the earth. My girlfriend calls it the earthquake (she hated it, but I think it is growing on her).

dual tempests was my first choice then the new av15 came out. and wow. but the tempest is a great sub and you dont need as much power to drive them you can proabley do a dual tempest for about 550 of you can get a good deal on the plate amps.

BL, can you run an actual FR sweep and punch up the numbers? See the thread "Stryke Force Has Landed" for an idea of what I am talking about.

Sorry BL - totally my fault - I was going from memory and messed up the thread title. Anyway, check out the FR data and the sweeps I posted and if you run some numbers, I'll graph it up and throw it on the site.

Strictly for fun - your choice - I think evaluating FR is an underrated tool for bass management where there are full range vs. high/low pass issues and decisions and sub placement also clearly affects FR in the room. Although moving the HW seems like it would require a forklift.

Ok, just making sure. That was the only thread I found last night that was remotely close so I kind of figured that is what you were talking about. I'll run the sweep later tonight or by the end of the weekend at the latest.

    Thanks again,
