......50's NOS Raytheon Black Plate Triple Mica for $60. It's an odd tube designation that is a variant of the 12AT7 my Dared uses.

It seems I read the Raytheon Black Plates are supposed to sound wonderful. I'm doing a LOT of tube buying/rolling and this is towards the upper end of $$$ strictly for comparing/contrasting tubes for this pre.

P.s. Let me know your thoughts.

Probably just found my answer here as these are the exact tubes I'm looking at.

A great dual triode much like the 7062 above, but with USA blackplate military specs. 1950s vintage with triple mica and a sweetness you have to hear to believe. These are the low noise audio screened, 10,000hr. rated heater life tubes. You may never go back to a 12AT7 once you hear these.

My tube experience with the Raytheon's is limited to the 6sn7 and some other 9 pin versions, all of which have been positive,,it's a tube that grew on me,, subtle at first,,and as I heard others,, the differences were more apparent. Good luck.
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Yeah, I hear ya George. Experimentation is the key. Just don;t want to overpay for a less popular tube designation if I need to flip them eventually.

So far this is I've used in place of 12AT7's

RFT ECC81 (nice soundstage, not very forgiving and super linear midrange)
RCA 6211 (blk plate) sweet, open
RCA 6201 (blk plate) sweet, open
GE JAN 5965 (gray plate) a tad dry

    On the way

    CBS Hytron 7728 Gold Pins
1950 RCA black plate 5V4G rectifier.

    Looking at getting

GE 6211 clear top double side getter gray plate
    RCA 6201WA black plates
    GE 6979 gray plates
    Mullard ECC81
Telefunken ECC801S (if they don;t go to high) very rare and desirable
