It depends on what youre after. If all youre wanting is some decent tunes while you drive back and forth to work, theyll do fine off the head unit. If you want as good a sound quality as you can get, youll need an amp. A head unit is a horrible power source. There aint much power in them and they run out of clean power very quickly.

That amp would be considerable better than a head unit in terms of improving sound quality. It also depends on how much you want to spend. Yes, 35x4 from a real amp will be better but 75x4 would be better still but more expensive.

Thanks Macleod. Now i was going to install 4 of these in the stock location and run a 4 channel amp to them, Whould it be better to run a better front speaker in the door , not run any rears and bridge the rear channel of a four channel amp to run a sub? what to do ?

I guess it all boils down to what youre trying to accomplish and how much youre wanting to spend.

If youre just wanting some tunes for the commute - slap some 5x7's in there and run them off the head unit.

If youre wanting to enjoy your tunes during the commute and maybe crank em up every now and then youll need an amp with the 200.4 being the MINIMUM.

If youre wanting not only some crankability but the most accurate soundstage you can create as well, then youll want to invest in a set of components like the MM5251 or MM6501 and then either bi-amp them with the 200.4 (of 500.4 depending on your budet) or run them off a stout 2 channel like the 200.2.

Same deal with a sub. If you want a little extra low end then a quality 8 or 10 with 300-500 watts will be plenty. If youre wanting great sub bass reproduction with plenty of oomph then at least a single 12 with 600-1000 watts is in order. Nothing fance, just a single 12" sub in a sealed MDF box built to spec and a proper amp.

I think i like your third choice with the MM6501. Not having rears won't have that much effect on sound?
    Thanks again

Not having rears will actually improve your sound. Having the same frequencies hitting your ears from different distances will cause phase and cancellation issues and will smear the detail. How many reference 2 channel home audio systems you know of that use rear speakers? ;)

Unless youre listening to 5.1 channel music, there is no reason to have rear speakers.
