how much should it cost to paint the hood of my truck?

the hood of my truck needs to be repainted. I need to do this of course before winter hits. so I have no idea when I go get an estimate(s) approx how much should it cost to just have the hood repainted?

someone in the know give me some $$ firgures to work with. I have in my mind that a good middle of the road job should run about $500 - $650. But I could be dreaming and it could very well be double or triple that. I just don't know what to expect.

Take it to a body shop and have the hood painted.

Depending on the color. You can usually never panel paint a car and have it match..

They would need to blend into the fenders to get an exact match..

I would say you looking at about $475.00 out the door to have it done. Maybe cheaper if they don't blend the fenders and they get a good match....

I'll be getting some estimates this Friday.. so i'll let you know what my findings are. If you are right or pretty close Nik I would be cool with approx $475-ish.

I just wanted to go get those estimates with a little knowledge before I get raped over the hood by the body shop. :eek:

Depends on what kind of paint job you are looking at and the quality you want.
MAACO can paint it on the cheap; they charge $300 for your entire car... Of course, that's if you don't mind a little spray on the glass or seals...
A great body shop wouldn't charge more than $500, I'm sure, to take the color back to factory or solid color with clear coat on it, at least I don't think they would.

i'm not going with Macco, that i know already. I won't even go there for an estimate.. because of their reputation I will avoid them.

I'm looking for a good paint job.. certainly not a collector show room quality either.. just a good color match where it'll last and not look like it's 3 shades different from the rest of the truck. blending the hood to match to me is the most important thing.

Had to have the bumper repainted and a dent repaired on my car. Cost was ~$400 and they did a great job.

Maaco is like Ammco Transmissions. It depends on the shop more than the name.

But seriously - just a hood? That should be a piece of cake. A monkey could do the masking (or just pop the hood off the truck and drop it off!) and it's only so hard to prep & paint a basically flat piece of metal.

I say get an estimate from 'em, if its cheap, tell them to show you some cars they've done.

I've seen some pretty fair $300 Maaco jobs

You know if you really want to save some money, you could just get some of that paint-on bedliner stuff and cover the truck with it.

Blending new paint toold paint will be damn near impossible, from my limited experience with this topic.
I used to own a '65 Beetle and so I hung around with some owners of old beetles.
You don't match paint... You re-paint to match.
If you don't need any bodywork and the metal is in good shape, you could probably get a fresh, glossy paint job for a decent price...
You could even find a community/trade school teaching an auto body paint course and let them do it there for a very small price... Sometimes even free...

+1 on that we have a local Ammco Transmissions shop in town and I wouldn't take my truck anywhere else they do a fantastic job.

Al, to do it right, the shop will need to blend the color at least to the fenders and under and around the windshield.

What about the roof and sides of the bed? Is it glare or the entire red top color seems to have deteriorated beyond saving with buffing and polishing.

That's a nice truck, DB (at least it is to me). If it were mine, I'd be thinking what Nikolas said. He knows his stuff when it comes to this, and he has several projects to prove it on here in the DIY section. If it's worth doing on that truck, and it looks to me like it is worth doing, then I would do it right.

We have an old 1994 truck with all original paint that doesn't look so hot any more. The mechanic says she's a keeper (he actually said he didn't believe he'd ever seen a 1994 K1500 in such good condition), I really want to have her totally repainted at some point. The original paint just faded over time, and scratched surprisingly easily too. Some of the panels don't even match properly any more ... I'm thinking it must have been some crappy stuff Chevrolet were using back then or somethin'. But, she does do the job she has to do (tow a steel trailer and a horse or two), and a similar brand new truck would not only cost about $40,000, but it wouldn't be much of an improvement, really, either.

the rest of the truck is fine.. yes for it's age the paint is starting to oxidize somewhat. but I think with some TLC and elbow grease I can bring it back enough to not have to paint the entire truck.. as you can see it's two toned in color.

The hood is down to bare metal. and is the most pressing part I need to get painted. not much blending would need to take place as i see it.. only where the hood attaches to the frame near the windshield. since the fenders are off white.

tomorrow I will get some estimates though.

i got two estimates today.. one for $500 and the other for $1,250. of course the more expensive one is a higher quality job and I am just amazed at how much work they will do to color match it with the rest of the fenders. I mean, they are talking about removing the left and right fenders, the front bumper, pin striping to match again.. etc. $$

the lesser estimate is more of your standard job... they remove the hood, strip the old paint off.. sand it, prime it, repaint, clear coat, etc.

sine this is a third vehicle.. i don't need a really expensive paint job. both shops to quality work.

i am leaning towards the less expensive paint job right now.
