ok just curious here. i have 2 pair of the rt55i speakers and was looking to replace the crossover caps to see if i could get a better sound. when i was looking at the crossover i saw one set has polyfil stuffing and one set does not. so i was wondering what does the polyfil do, is it benificial, should i stuff the other speakers or take it out of the one that have it. thanks

I would put polyfil in the other speakers.

+1 on this as the stuffing is used to isolate and eliminate some of the cabinet from resonating.

    Cheers!

I put polyfill in both my sub and my CS2. they both sound better. Just make sure its fire proof. Oh! don't overstuff or they'll sound muffled. Good luck and tell us how you like it.

thanks to all for the responses as i wasn't sure which i needed to do. don't know what my subs have in them(never looked) but now have another question. if i put polyfil in my speakers and subs how does that affect the ports. i have ported subs and the rt55i has a arc(think thats what its called) port. will these be affected and if so how.

Only add a little at a time, preferably behind the mids/woofer, and don't block the ports.

FYI and FWIW: actually what the stuffing does is make the box look 'bigger' inside by absorbing (some of) the backwave's energy, converting it to heat. This is a way to get a lower f3 in a smaller (sealed) box -- it works analogously with a vented box (Helmholz radiator), too.

This is pretty good although it doesn't say much about the thermodynamics of box stuffing:

To its credit, though, the Wikipedia article on speaker enclosures does mention it:
