I had built a gaming rig for kid awhile back and one day he tried to turn it on and it was dead.....Okay should be the power supply, right?

Turned out I had to replace the power supply, motherboard, hard drive, and video card. Antec, Asus, and Western Digital replaced everything. MSI said the video card was out of warranty.

Do you think the power supply would do this much damage when it went?

Yup.

When a power supply goes it can easily send out bad power to every component in the system, killing them.

You're lucky all that was replaced under warranty, since technically the power supply killed them all, and it's not the fault of those components that they died.

Spend extra money on the power supply....some antecs are known for being unreliable.

Yeah thats what I thought too, pretty lucky indeed. This is the first time I've had issues with an Antec power supply. I did put a Corsair in the last one I built though...

I'd rather have an Antec than a Corsair. I run a PC Power and Cooling right now - the most reliable out there. 750w and it's silent!

On another note, man, video cards these days.....You need a small nuclear power plant to run the things....

It depends on the application for the video card I suppose. Half my cards are passive (7300LE, 2400HD's) half active (Fire GL's, Quadros, and of course the old 3870HD and 8800GT).

They take a LOT of power....

Best power supply for the money in my opinion for these - pull the psu from a junked Dell XPS 700/710/720. They're all made by PC Power and Cooling (what do they offer cooling wise anyways?) and are either 750w or 1000w, and have the weight to back it up. They do have an additional 20 pin ATX power connector instead of the 4pin ATX 12V, but you can pull 2 yellow and 2 black from the 20 pin to creat the 4pin atx12v easily, and the extra 12V's on that 20pin connector are easily converted to 4pin molex for drives etc.

These can be had for $20 on ebay....far cheaper than full retail PPC 750w psus going for 100+.

Ugh... don't get me started. I remember when i got my first REAL video card, an Asus V9999 Gamer Edition. Essentially an old GeForce 6800 non-ultra on an Ultra PCB with the faster Ultra memory. Once i unlocked the remaining 4 pipes, my PSU was not a happy camper.

I thought that card was ridiculous. And probably like you, i took a look around what's offered these days. Holy crap.

I have two 7950GTX's sitting at home... talk about power hungry. Those sit next to the FireGL V7100 (i think?) unused....next to the quadro thats essentially a 7900GTX...but 20x the price.

We've had many Antec power supply failures here, usually takes out other componnents as well. They are usually still uner warranty, but we don't bother to exchange them, no more Antecs for us.

I've probably worked on a few thousand computers over the last couple decades and it does seem that the Antec crop of the last 6-7 years has had a lot more problems than the Antec of the old days. I would have to agree that PC Power and Cooling is putting out some good stuff but I would disagree with the comment about Corsair. I've been running a Corsair for 2 years 7 X 24 and its been great. Had good luck with Enermax also.

It's possible, but I'd lean more at it being a surge. Kid plugs directly into the wall socket, lightning or a surge a few days later, bang. Gone.

If it happens again using a new P.S., you've been warned.

I had an Antec go on me, too- and this wasn't on a high-power rig. Didn't fry anything else, but it was still a major annoyance.

Im running an Antec right now in my new rig and it performs well. Hope I never have a problem with it. I also run a GTX275 video card and it requires two power inputs to run so I can understand the need for big power supply. My new rig consist of Antec 902 case, gigabyte 790x-ud4p mobo, 500 gb WD HD, dual Lite On DVD+RW drives, GTX275 video, AMD Phenom II X4 920 2.8 ghz CPU overclocked @ 3.5 ghz, Xigmatek Dark Knight CPU HSF, 4gb Kingston Hyper X DDR2. Of all the components in this new rig, I think the cooler and fan impresses me the most.

Shoot, my first was a TNT Ultra2, the bomb at the time! It had a whole 32MB of RAM! Since then, Radeon 9800pro, GeForce 5900, ATI x800AIW, x1950pro, and now I have a 9600GSO w/768MB of DDR3

Its funny how fast the technology has progressed. I'm sure allot of you remember when 512mb ram was considered allot in a setup. I remember my old AMD cartridge processors. Funny. My 1st setup AMD K7 Slot A 500mhz CPU. When I finally reached 1gig, oh the excitement.

Yep, a cartridge Athlon 600mhz was the first that I built too. That was some ridiculously unstable crap back then. Driver support was terrible! I was on a budget at that time and could only afford 256mb (which was more than $100 a stick back then). I spent almost $200 for a 20GB hard-drive at that time also.

Antec's cheaper line had issues with bad capacitors for a while. They seem to be okay now, and most of the ones you get back in warranty are actually made by Delta. I had three go in the life of one PC that I built.

As for old reminiscing about computers... I'm only 23, but I remember our first PC being a 486/66 dx2 w/ 4mb RAM and a 540mb HD. No 3d processing, and a 1x CDROM drive.

The first machine that was actually mine was a Socket 7 AMD K6-II 450mhz with 128mb PC-100 ram and a VooDoo Banshee 16mb card. I played all my favorite games like Doom2 and Rise of the Triad on a MASSIVE 15" CRT monitor. I think I had a 1.2 gb HD at the time. Next step for Processor was an AMD Athlon 800mhz (I skipped the slot procs, this was a socket), then to a 2100+, and then to a Pentium 4 3.2ghz, which is where I'm at now.

Well.... my first crazy high end (at the time) card.

First real one i remember was a 9600xt 256mb edition, and that wasn't bad. Then i went to a PNY 5900se that i modded, it held an overclock like no other. Was good for 54000 on Aquamark3 paired with a Socket A cpu.

Then i got the V9999 GE. Monster of a card, i loved that thing. I might even still have it around somewhere.

But yeah.... i'm only 23.

And lets not forget the lights..... has the Vegas strip moved into your case....lol
