Hi All,

Well after much deliberation, I decided to upgrade my old Marantz 880 receiver with a Marantz SR-9200. I think it will do a better job of driving my Lsi15's than the old receiver. Besides, it has many more bells and whistles than the old receiver. Obviously, I'm excited here!! Guess I don't have a life! Ha Ha! I'll post a review when it arrives and I get it all hooked up!!

Colleen, may I ask why you decided to go with Marantz again? Was there something you liked about your 880 that made you want to go with Marantz again? Was it the sound, price, features, etc. Did you look at other receivers, and you kept coming back to the Marantz 9200?

    thanks, Al

    Hi,

Well first of all I have to be honest here and say that I'm a real Marantz head. I've always had a good relationship with the technical support guys at Marantz, they take the time to answer my questions and go out of their way for me. I even have a nice vintage 1970 receiver that I sought out, which I use in my bedroom system. It drives a pair of classic Polk Rt-5's and sounds quite amazing. I think Marantz makes quality, sweet sounding equipment. My main listening system is tube with electrostatic speakers. I really love the sweet sound of tubes and the clarity and presence of electrostatic speakers.

The Marantz SR-9200 receiver is built like a tank weighing in at 45lbs. Sonically, the discontinued Marantz SR-14ex is a little better, but it lacks a few of the home theater bells and whistles that the SR-9200 has. I also have found that their maximum power rating is usually conservative and the units have more kick to them than you would think. I fact my 880, which is putting out roughly 150 watts per channel to my new Polk LSi 15's is no slouch. It drives them quite nicely. But the unit lacks DTS, and multiple digital optical inputs that I plan to use with my HDTV, Replay TV, and DVD player. This unit is a little retro too because it has the old gyro tuning wheel, which was a popular Marantz feature in the past. My 1970's receiver has the gyro tuner and the tuner in that receiver is unbeliveable!

Yes, I have looked at and listened to other units. But I have always stayed with Marantz. Sorry, guess I'm not the best person to pose this question to.

thanks Colleen, I was just curious. I have nothing against Marantz. I own one myself.. SR5000 it's the first Marantz I've ever owned. I have heard that those "classic" Marantzs have great warm sound to them. Something I've read is somewhat lacking in their current receivers. BUt I like mine. and a ways down the road when it's upgrade time.. i will again look at Marantz.

    Hi,

Well the best brand new price I found was for around $2,300.
They can be purchased dealer authorized factory refurbished for $1,800.
I opted to purchase used (4 months old) from a friend of a friend who recently became unemployed, for $1,400.

Full bust out retail for the thing is supposedly $3,000.
