Software EQ vs. receiver EQ

I have a 2.1 system hooked up to my computer. The receiver doesn't have much at all for a built in equalizer. I am wondering peoples opinions on using a software equalizer (like Winamp, or some other program) vs the equalizer built into the receiver. Does using software's EQ have any detrimental effects?

I don't see any reason why not. Software EQ is basically whats in a receiver it just uses hardware to measure and calculate. I could be wrong though.Currently looking for speakers(spending 1K)

Try them both, use the one that sounds best to you.

You must be new here.
According to some:
"Besides that if your rack needs an EQ something is lacking in your gear or you just like a particular frequency."
Remember your room NEVER has any effect on your sound.
And:
Nope, never. If you need one then you have other issues.
Yep, because if the room in your house is a bit wonky, just tear the room out and put a new one in. You can buy new acoustically perfect rooms at K-Mart now days.
Another particular gem of wisdom (I call it the 'upgrade to better equipment negates room effects/response syndrome' UBENRE/RS for short).
No equalizer or tone controls are needed if you're gear is up to snuff.
In short he is saying your equipment is shite.
If you are really serious you will play with speaker position and room treatments first. EQ a distant third for what ails you. -

This is just your computer rig, or your main source of sound?
Software eq's aren't ideal, because they are dependent on your sound card quality. Eq's aren't the great satan some make them out to be....but they can be.
If you absolutely must use it, use it to cut the peaks, rather than boost the nulls. Boosting frequencies amplifies the noise level. Since you mentioned Winamp, are you using it for mp3 music? If yes, instead of fiddling with an eq, I would seek out better quality formats. You'll find you won't need to mess with them much to have better sound. -

Look who's back :rolleyes:"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. I use Foobar 2000 on my comp, sound card is the Creatvie SB X-FI, nice card.
Foobar is a phenominal player. Excellent EQ settings. I dunno tho, at the end of the day its all about personal choices tho.
