I bought a 1991 Ford F150 XLT Lariat from a friend for a good price. truck is in pretty good condition with 160k miles. As with any vehicle this old.. it does have some minor issues. The biggest thing is that the paint on the hood has peeled in several place. this for some reason seemed to be very common in vehicles from that time. If memory serves me right.. I think the "K" cars had lots of problem with peeling paint a year or two after they were driven off the lot.

So what is the best way to strip the old paint off and apply a new coat of fresh paint. There are a few spots where the owner has sanded the paint off down to the bare metal. Of course if left to go for to long.. it'll eventually start to rust out since it's bare metal. I would like to finish what he began by removing the remaining old paint then have a body shop spray a nice fresh coat of new primer and paint on it. then sealant if needed. Where to begin though?

What do you think it would cost to have a paint job done for just the hood? The paint on the rest of the truck is fine... I don't need to paint the entire truck and I won't. I'm not looking for the paint job to be a collector car quality or anything like that.. but I want it to match as closely as possible the rest of the truck.

Part 2:

My current 1970 Ford F100 Sport Custom truck, I am going to sell for low $ because it has tons of issues mechanically. But first I want to wash it good and give it a wax job that i'll do myself. what type of wax would you recommend for a nearly 40 yr old truck? Truck has been painted of course since it was new... but the paint has faded quite a bit.

As for the wax, i've had great luck with "FlashWax." I don't know where you could get it around your area, but i can get it at some of the local CarQuests.

It's a liquid rather than a paste. A bottle will last you for years, and it's way easier to use than a paste. Finish is great.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

    Here, company is "Malco."

    http://www.flashwax.com/polishwax.html

Top product. $15 for a quart, and it'll be good for only god knows how long.

I have a bottle i've been using for about two years. Granted, i don't wash my cars ALL that often, but i get in at least 20 washes a year between all of them. The bottle is still almost half full.

You more than get your money's worth.

I'm washing my 18 year old original paint Celica again this weekend, using this stuff. If you want to wait to see results, i can post up pictures. :)

Not to hijack, but I'd love to see pics if you don't mind. I could definitely go for a change in routine for my waxing.

Good luck with selling the F100, danger boy!

Take it to a body shop and have the hood painted.

Depending on the color. You can usually never panel paint a car and have it match..

They would need to blend into the fenders to get an exact match..

I would say you looking at about $475.00 out the door to have it done. Maybe cheaper if they don't blend the fenders and they get a good match....

Cool.. oh yeah. no way in hell I'd attempt to do it myself and have it look anyway decent. I was hoping to do the prep work myself and then have the body shop do the paint job.

But maybe I should just remove the hood and have them do it all. they have the sanders to do it right and faster than I ever could.

Part1........depending on your taste, a CARBON FIBER is an option. Go to the shop, it shouldn't cause that much.

    Part2.......Go to Walmart.

    Trust me.

Have the body shop do all the work.

The prep work is the most important part...

And its not going to save you that much anyway...

Will do, just try to overlook the general state of the car. :p I'll get some close up shots of where the paint is still in good shape. It's a bit battle-scarred after 18 years, but still turns into a decent 10 footer.

Well, besides the newly painted bumper and front fenders. I was dumb and let some idiot paint them.
