Hello again everyone,

My pending deal on the adcom 555 fell through, can someone please tell me is this amp (Carver TFM42) is of common ground make. I am still looking for something for my SDA1A.

Getting lil frustrated, just want to make sure I can properly enjoy these speakers :(

Again, Thanks in advance.

Yes I think so, but to be sure go here and ask the same question.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Great amp. Yes it is common ground. 375 WPC in 8 ohm and 500 WPC into 4 ohm.

$300 is a good price for that amp.

More power and IMHO sounds better than the Adcom GFA-555 so I say yes :)

It's a good price if the amp has no issues & doesn't need re-capping...

You have to remember that these amps are great but TNRabbit is right. Those caps are getting close to 20 years old and might need some service.

I would invest $300 knowing I might have to put another $200 or so to get fixed in the future. Hard to find a 375 wpc amp for around $500 these days.

Thanks everyone, this has to be the fastest responding and by far the friendliest group of people yet concerning a forum.

I did pick the amp up, outside of a few minor scratches on the top it is cosmetically pleasing. Seems to be a solid runner as well, only a little time will tell there.

Now that I been re-bitten by the audio bug it is time to look for a nice pre-amp. My wife is already having horrible flashbacks from the 80's and early 90's when I went on what seemed to be a 10 year buy-buy-buy rampage.

My hats off to everyone here and once again thanks for all the useful tips.

You can usually find one of several models of Carver pre's w/Sonic Holography for reasonable prices on ebay or CL. I've been using a Luxman TP-114 with, I feel, stellar results with a TFM 45 (same amp). bluecomet might be willing to part with one as he has now picked up it's big brother the TP-117. Adcoms are pretty popular here for an inexpensive pre as well.

I have a m1.5t 350 wpc @ 8 ohms and it drives my 2.3tl really well. turned it up to near ear splitting levels and barely got the second set of lights to flicker. It would be a good idea to send it in for a tune up though.

I got 3 of them. The last one I got, the guy had it since new and only used it maybe a dozen times (according to him). Anyway, when it came it looked new and shiney and the interior was so clean it looked like it had never been turned on. These carver's are a good buy for the $$.
