First post for me! Did Polk ever make a 3-way speaker before 1990's?

Hi Everybody,

This is my first post on this forum. I had a question for coworker regarding Polk speakers and he said I could have it answered here.

First a little background. I am a audio enthusiast who happens to also be an avid DIYer. Speakers, amplifiers (tube and solid state), DACs...I've done a lot over the last 20 years. I'm also an electrical engineer that has worked with wireless and cabled communication systems for the last 15 years doing discrete and integrated circuit design. From my background I have developed a keen interest in the technical aspects of audio design. If you have a circuit design question, I can probably help.

I also have quite a collection of vintage audio equipment. Consequence of me hanging out at the local electronics flea market.... :p

Back to my question. Has Polk Audio ever produced a true 3-way speaker system? I have two pairs of Polk speakers and both have passive radiators but are two-ways. It seems that Polk has used mostly 6.5" mid-basses for most of their history. Thanks ahead of time.

To the best of my knowledge, they didn't make any true 3-ways until more recent times.

Many of their vintage speakers had passive radiators, which ranged in size from 6.5" on the smaller Monitor's, all the way up to 15" on the larger SDA's. 8", 10" and 12" PR's were also used on various models between.

Several of the SDA models used cascade tapered arrays on the tweeters, in which only one tweeter would be in use on certain frequencies...all the way up to 4 tweeters at other frequencies.

By the way, welcome to Club Polk!:)

What kind of Polk's do you have?

You could call some (ok, maybe just one) of the SDA's a three way since the crossover sent a different signal to three groups of drivers (3.1TL's come to mind).

I cannot think of a classic polk that was a traditional three way design though. (traditional defined as crossover divides signal into bass - mid - tweeter)
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

    Welcome to Club Polk!

I have two pair of Monitor 5's. Both of which are stored at my parents place.

I have tons of vintage tube stuff. Eico, Heathkit, Dynaco, Pilot, and HH Scott are all represented. No Fisher though... Most of my stuff acquired free or for little money from the ham swaps before Ebay raised the prices to stratospheric levels. My favorites out of the bunch are the Heathkit W-5m's and Eico HF-20's amplifiers because the output tubes are fairly cheap and the circuits are simple. I am fortunate to have more than one of each.
