I really liked this one. A truly creepy performance from Robin Williams. The score accentuates, rather than dominates. Some people have complained that the film & William's performance both seem too sterile & distant, lacking in something that will engage the viewer. I disagree. I think that people are so used to hyperkinetic editing, cartoonishly deranged villains, & blaring soundtracks that they expect movies to be like video games.
The deliberate pacing, the tension that mostly lurks beneath the surface of the words & facial expressions, the tension between external image & underlying reality all work together. The outward aspects of the store vs behind the scenes, the outward aspects of the marriage vs the reality, the outward Robin Williams vs his inner self & private life, pictures vs reality--all of it meshes seamlessly, w/out being heavy-handed. A precise, calculated film that is far more unsettling than a hundred slasher flicks.

I agree in some respects. I also liked the movie, but found that RW's character didnt really come alive to me until the last 30 minutes. Loved the scene where he was fantasizing about being in their home, that was good.
Actually the more I think about it, the character was more developed than you think I guess. Its more of an intellectual thriller. You have to watch RW and see him walk and his mannerism's. You go thru a couple emotions with him.
Great wording and review Meestercleef. Good movie either way, glad I bought it on DVD.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
2 out of 5 stars. One of the worst endings I have ever seen in a movie.
